In the late 80s, the shoot out was a 1:1 with the keeper.

Attacker with ball around 35 yds maybe, not sure.

Keeper on the line.

Whistle start.

Attacker had some # of seconds to get a shot off.

Each team sent 5.

Then 1 each in sudden death like pks today.

 

Don't know when it changed, but definitely sometime after fall '88.

 

I like that. It makes the penalty kick more about skill of the goalie and shooter than a one-touch point blank range kick.

Yes they are practiced like all parts of the game. My observation from my daughter's team is that they seem to practice more at the end of the season because in the regular season a non district game can end in a tie so they aren't used as much. As a goalie her body can attest to the practice for the post season taking 50-100 PK's between the two goalies at the end of most practices in late Sept, Oct.

I'm not a fan of penalty kicks, mainly because it is so difficult for the goalie. Getting a save pretty much comes down to guessing right. For whatever it's worth though, I can't figure out a better way to decide a winner.

 

PKs from the 18-yard box. Scoot 'em back a bit and make em SHOOT, instead of just passing inside the post. I was a below-average soccer player, but I was always one of the team's best PK takers because I could drill a toe ball inside the left or right post.
