BluegrassPreps Class 1A Football Rankings (10/9) Discussion

Class 1A

Kentucky Country Day’s status as the Class’ 2nd ranked team seemed secure for most of the night against fellow Top 10 Louisville Holy Cross, but the Bearcats had to withstand a furious rally to hold on to the win. Hazard put the finishing touches on a District Championship by defeating Phelps and now go for bragging rights in a massive Eastern Kentucky showdown with Paintsville. This isn’t the only headlining showdown on the docket, surprisingly, Ludlow will put the last undefeated record in Class 1A on the line against top ranked Beechwood. Paris got all they could handle from Nicholas County but were able to survive another day.

1. Beechwood vs. #6 Ludlow

2. Kentucky Country Day at Rock Creek Academy (IN)

3. Hazard at #4 Paintsville

4. Paintsville vs. #3 Hazard

5. Raceland vs. Fairview

6. Ludlow at #1 Beechwood

7. Louisville Holy Cross at Frankfort

8. Paris vs. Bishop Brossart

9. Pikeville vs. Phelps

10. Williamsburg vs. Pineville

Really excited to see what happens in the Ludlow vs. Beechwood game.

If Paintsville wins convincingly this week against Hazard, it is possible they leap from KCD for the #2 spot?

I think that's reasonable to expect. It's a much anticipated game with a resilient Hazard team. KCD has an absolute walkover this Friday: there are no style points to be gained from a win against Rock Creek in Indiana. So it wouldn't surprise me, especially if Paintsville wins in a "statement" kind of way. The Tigers have done little wrong this year and look to be the team most likely to line up against Beechwood at Kroger Field.

It should be noted that Calpreps, which has been really predictive this year, ranks KCD in the two slot behind Beechwood in 1A, and gives a nod to the Bearcats on strength of schedule. If Paintsville and KCD squared off today, Calpreps pojects a slugfest squeeker with KCD prevailing by 3...so basically an even match up. It probably ain't never gonna happen due to the monsters lurking in NYK (Beechwood especially, but Ludlow too). But what a fun game the Tigers and Bearcats might be!

Worth noting that in Dave Cantralls mathematical calculation Beechwood rates at a 76.6, Paintsville a 71.9, KCD all the way down at 7th after Friday with a 54.2. AP has Paintsville 1, BW 2 and has for several weeks. No way KCD deserves this ranking after a 5 point win over a 3-4 team who barely beat Paris. I think most on this site would absolutely agree that the top 4 needs shaken up and has for 2-3 weeks. I guess in the big picture rankings are for discussion only as they mean nothing. Personally I think its 1)Beechwood 2)Hazard 3)Paintsville and 4)Raceland, for once I agree with Dave Cantrall's top 4

Im curious, looking at CalPreps strength of schedule, how does Hazard's SOS out rank Paintsville? Pikeville and Hazard have similar SOS according to CalPreps, no way that is accurate! Pikeville has played the 2nd most difficult class A schedule behind Beechwood, not even close! In all polls aside from 1A/3A, the top 5 rankings very closely resemble calpreps rankings. Adjustments based on some criteria were made to those 2 polls. Just curious Ram, did you make the short trip to Westwood to watch Paintsville, what were your thoughts? Not trying to make anyone mad, just stating my opinion in a discussion, I think class A rankings here need shook up.

If you look closely, it is clear where Hazard outranks Paintsville on strength of schedule. Hurricane and Somerset are a wash. Then you see Hazard has a win over Harlan County, who is a significantly better team than any other team Paintsville has played. Both have played Pikeville. Lawrence County and Prestonsburg balance each other out. Williamsburg is a little better than Letcher County Central. Then Paintsville has three very weak opponents to Hazard's one very weak opponent. The really good Hazard win over Harlan County helps them and the two extra weak opponents on Paintsville's schedule hurts them on SOS.

Hazard has been on the verge of falling below Paintsville with the Smith brothers injuries but the Bulldogs put two nice wins on the books after the injuries - Prestonsburg and Pikeville. Hard to drop them in the rankings as they keep winning against solid opponents.

The good news for you - Paintsville gets their chance to jump over Hazard in their face off Friday night. I doubt Paintsville can overtake Kentucky Country Day in the rankings even with a win over Hazard, but their resume will be very similar to KCD's with a Hazard win so it is possible.

Does Fleming County not factor in the SOS? They will more than likely be 9-1 and district champs when Paintsvile travels to Fleming. Hurricane beats Somerset, thats an opinion. Wburg is a lot better than a winless LCHS team, also an opinion. Harlan Co is 3-4 with their only quality win ovr Ashland. Paintsville held Pikeville lifeless vs Hazard giving up 26 points to Pikeville, you guys said those a wash also, that is where scores become misleading. I wish Pikeville had posted stats for those games, would tell the full story! Every team on Paintsville's schedule would beat Phelps(Fview weakest on PHS schedule and they did beat Phelps) and LCC, so I guess we have to agree to disagree VOR. As you said, it all shakes out in the coming weeks thankfully! This is a discussion board, just offering an opinion.

It's a very good thing this game happens this week. I would love to see the game with both 100% but that's not going to happen.

Pikeville got beat 28-0 but the last touchdown was put in the end zone with very little time left in the fourth quarter. So defensively Pikeville held their own. Plus Pikeville made a QB switch in the Hazard game and their offense has came alive. I'm very eager to get the seedinga for the playoffs to see how things shake up.

I think Paintsville's D is one of, if not the best in Class A. Hard to beat a team if you cannot score! Fview did not have a 1st down Friday night in the 1st half. The final scores make it appear closer in most games, but Chirico pulls his guys early, those late TDs affect mathematical calculations.

I am using the calpreps rankings that you cited in making the comparisons I listed.

The rankings and SOS are based on who you have played so far and the results. It doesn't include teams you have not played yet - so Fleming County is not a factor in the discussion until Paintsville plays them.

Calpreps has Somerset ranked #2769 and Hurricane #2742 - a dead heat.

Harlan County is ranked #4744, well above Paintsville's next best opponent after Hurricane - Pikeville #7388.

Calpreps has Williamsburg a 10 point favorite over Letcher County Central. Move LCC to the weak opponents list if you want and Hazard still only has two weak opponents versus Paintsville's three weak opponents. That extra weak opponent drags down Paintsville's SOS.

I agree they are very solid defensively. I'm eager to see the fullback dives from Mr. Tyrese Allen. I wish we could get these Game of the Week threads to pick up.

VOR you gonna have to get you a hudl account, all those calculations and numbers are clouding your vision. Injuries/substitutions all have a direct affect on those numbers, a lot more can be seen watching a team online or in person. I am not the only one that disagrees with you guys, see the AP Poll. I think Paintsville got more first place votes this week than BW? Not saying I agree that they deserve that ranking, but outside of this site, it appears a lot disagree with Paintsville being a 4 here. That was my original point...

Lots of teams get better throughout the season, I believe Raceland and Paintsville have improved as much as anyone. Paintsville did score a late TD on Pikeville with 1:54 left, that was after about an 8 minute 11 play drive that consumed the 4th qtr clock, both teams had 1s in. Pikeville has changed Qs and that helped, they had almost 300 yds of offense vs Hazard. Rumors circulating that their original Q is back and healthy, how will this affect things? Will be interesting to see how they continue to grow. Class A in the East should be fun to watch the rest of the way! Hard to beat a football team twice!

I watch plenty of film on Hudl and plenty of games in person as well. Again, you brought the calpreps data in as a basis of discussion so I followed up on it and used the same source to make points.

As to the AP poll, it is worthless to me. It is based purely on someone's record with minimal analysis and deep thinking by the voters.

You will not find a more accurate poll that that provided by BGP. Lot's of information and experience used in developing the polls. The AP is a joke in comparison.
