Both Defenses are that good. CAL's D is only giving up 10 pts a game. Our D I believe is the best in 2A

Great game by Desales. Excellent quarterback who is elusive and knows how to scramble for yards. Zero penalty yards is very impressive. As always, Coach Davis has assembled a defense that knows how to get to the ball. Looks to be lots of new faces and talent on Desales team. CAL has a lot of ground to make up if they are lucky enough to make it to a rematch. Desales and Danville look to be the best 2-A teams. Hard to get a read on Mayfield because of the schedule. Corbin and McCraken are good but the rest of the Mayfield's schedule is questionable. Of course with Mayfield's history you just have to assume they will be there in the semi-finals. No one out west can compete with them and I suspect Mayfield will not see a team that keeps it closer than 30 points for the next five weeks. Hard to go all in on Lexington Christian because of their defense. 50-60 points a game is mind blowing but Lexington Christian is not scoring like that against Desales, Mayfield or CAL. Bottom line is the Colts are back and 2-A should take notice.

Sometime it just takes that special circumstance when the right coach arrives at just the right time. Same thing happened when Ty Scroggins arrived at central. Both of these schools have had some fine coaches and great players, but they always fell short of championships. No longer is that true.

Semper, Mayfield hasn't lost a playoff game at home in about 10 years. Guess where they play this year?

CAL D is legit, they pass cover very well. Run defense is also good. Don't take them lightly or you will be disappointed. Their punter is excellent as he kept us backed up. They did miss handle the snap the first couple times they punted, but he was able send the ball long,..maybe the best I seen this season. I thought that their QB flip the ball in desperation late in the game that resulted in a,fumble return to their 4yd line whichthat set up our final TD...but i would like to see the replay on it. Final thoughts, we need to iron out some things on offense to help sustain drives. And when CAL get their QB Carr back, look out !

There were 10+ NHL hockey teams that scored more points Thurs night than CAL was able to muster Fri night.

 

Is DeSales defense that good, CALs offense that bad without Carr, or was this a combination of both?

 

Both. CAL is a different team without Carr. However, DeSales' D is stifling. With less than two minutes left in the game, CAL had five first downs and less than 100 total yards (they picked up about 50 yards or so during the last drive as time was running out). Their three points came on an interception return to the four yard line that became 4th and goal from the 7. They started four drives in Colts' territory (two on turnovers and two more on short directional punts away from Wright that went out of bounds), but they never got more than two first downs on any drive. Colts' game plan was excellent - swarm Wright and make someone else beat you. I just LOVE Wright. He was getting popped pretty good all night but never yielded and never showed any negative body language that I could see. On offense, DeSales has some game breaking speed that they have lacked in the last 2-3 years. I haven't seen the other 2A teams play, but at this point, I like this Colt team. Barring one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, they will be undefeated when they meet CAL again in about six weeks.

One of the biggest things in my opinion is that so far this year we have had some mental mistakes with some penalties which is uncharacteristic for a DeSales team, it's been an obvious issue that we needed to work on. Friday night on the road, against our rival, we had one penalty that was declined on an illegal shift on a punt. One penalty on the road, i'll take that everyday, and twice on Sunday.
