Mercer and Western on a collision course?

Featured Replies

In essence.... but at least Mercer has beat some schools with synonomous names... well sort of.

LCA- 1A semi-finalist...but.... season opener with brand new offensive style and personnel

South Laurel- Big school, high expectations...but.....horribly disappointing

Boyle County- Perennial powerhouse.....but.... WORLD OF TROUBLES THIS YEAR

Newport- Perennial bugaboo for Mercer...but.... track record this season of having an inept offense

Western on the other hand have beat up on homely low classification Lousivlle schools and a Breathitt team that has been untested aside from the blowout to Western.

In both cases a true read on these teams won't come until the afforementioned collision course

What I don't understand about this comment is how every week people say Breathitt will lose, or they will struggle with the team they play and they end up showing everyone wrong. The game against Western, if u take 2 mistakes away from Breathitt's defense (which is much improved now) it's a 1 score game. Breathitt had a chance to go up 21-0 against Western but turnovers ruined 3 drives before any team scored. The game was alot closer than the score showed

Cool so Western is even weaker than thought?

I have not predicted Breathitt to lose, nor to win for that matter HAHA.

When evaluating Breathitt what can you look at? Honestly? They defeated Harlan...who has defeated NOONE... they struggled mightily against the juggernaut known as the Cawood Trojans.. they defeated a Powell Valley team in a close game, PV has steadily been declining the past five years and are well below their normal form this season.

I started the buy/sell thread and included Breathitt for one specific reason.... just like the other teams listed its hard to tell if their record is product of being a really good team, or really fortunate in their scheduling.

If Breathitt can beat a mediocre Leslie this week convincingly and then take care of a pretty good Middlesboro then I will be convinced.

Just love you guys who trash other teams to make your point. Just doesn't say much for your ability to make a point. :creepy:

Well, I can agree with you that they struggled against Cawood, but thats fault of looking passed them to Leslie. Leslie struggled with Knott Central and no one even mentioned that. I ain't taking anything away from Western because from what i seen they are the hardest hitting team Breathitt has played. Breathitt from what i was told was scheduled by other teams because they believed they could beat Breathitt. All I'm saying is people put Breathitt down because they only have 4 seniors. They don't recieve the credit they deserve. No one remembers when Breathitt scrimmaged Pikeville, who took Belfry to the limit. Breathitt defeated Pikeville in a scrimmage 28-0. Just thought it was unfair to say Breathitt was beat to death by Western.

If both make it to the 3rd round then this is definitely a dangerous matchup for Mercer. Lou Western can match speed for speed as far as backfields. I'm not for sure how the rest of the matchups would play out. Anybody know enough about both teams to give their opinions and how they view this potential matchup playing out? It's very possible Russell or Belfry wont even see the Titans in the playoffs.

You say it is very possible Mercer won't even see Russell in the playoffs. Both Russell and Mercer are in region 3. How can that be?

Now that you mention it:

1A

2003 Danville

2004 Beechwood

3A

2004 Highlands (Jet SWEEP!)

4A

2004 St. X

2004 was definately the year of the running game.... and proof in point that a passing game is overrated if you are truly dominant at what you do.

St X ran well that year, but they also used five wides. They were at best 60-40 against good football teams. BTW, Highlands won state that year because they couldn't be scored on, not because of the points they were putting up. You are going to have to go back a long way to find a AAA or AAAA team that has had a high power offense on a state champ team that didn't utilize a passing game.

Belfry had no trouble putting up the numbers with their little to no passing offense in 2003 and 2004.

Hence AAA and AAAA that was stated in the previous post.

For some reason the KHSAA has district 3 playing district 5 and districts 4 and 6 playing each other in class 2a this year. So despite being in the same region, one will play out of the east bracket and one will play out of the west bracket from the 3rd round on of the playoffs.

Why did the KHSAA change the format in 2a and 4a?

The change in the playoff format.

I have no trouble making a point.... just call me the extra point kicker because I may not be consistent for alot,,but you can usually depend on me for one. :thumb: :D

I really hope I dont come off sounding like a jerk but:

1. If Bretahitt truly was a top tier team this year then they wouldn't be caught looking ahead..let alone to LESLIE COUNTY

2. Scrimmages have little to no bearing on the regular season... proof in point Highlands hung up 50+ on Male.... Johnson Central beat Belfry by like 4TD's... two years ago Sheldon Clark defeated Ironton, OH in a scrimmage. Putting stock in a scrimmage is like choosing your Super Bowl Champion from Pre-Season games. Sure you may be able to see a couple things about personnel, but it is impossible to judge a team in terms of consistent performance.

With that being said I am REALLY excited to see Breathitt regain their winning ways..especially with such a young team. They have quite possibly been the most consistent 2A power over the past 10 years and run a top flight program.

Hence AAA and AAAA that was stated in the previous post.

And I clearly need an eye exam. :creepy:

I have seen Western play this year. They hung 67 on 4A Butler, a somewhat average team with a decent running game. I've not seen other 2A teams, but on that one performance I saw, I would not count out Western. Their running attack is far above average.

As to the running attack vs. passing attack issue, proponents of either could cite a slew of examples to buttress their argument. If anything, this serves to illustrate that a good team can win implementing either style. Some examples, based on selected teams or selected years: Running- Belfry, X, Colerain. Passing-Male, Breathit County, T. I know that BGPers will be shocked, shocked I say, to hear this, but I have found that fans of one style of attack over another generally support a team that employs their favored style of offense! Hmmm....:D

I say that cause Mercer could get knocked out. They would have to make it to the finals to face Russell or Belfry.
