Mercer and Western on a collision course?

The Casey County News doesn't think it will happen.

I guess he didn't notice the JV subbing in during the 2nd qtr. Mercer does have a passing game. If Morgan is not getting it done in a situation where we have to pass then they have more qb's. Freeman Edwards is a tall Qb who has been spending his time on defense. Then you have Trevor Short who is a serious threat. This guy definitely doesnt know what he is talking about. Casey might have been in the Mercer backfield a couple of times. But when you score 66 points and the game is called due to bad weather I don't see where his theory has any ground to stand on. I had a buddy from Casey co who told me of this article and he just laughed as well. It's more of a lack of respect more then anything.

HAHA if oen thing has been proven in the past three years in 2A is that a passing game IS NOT A QUALIFICATION TO WIN A STATE TITLE!

Belfry vs. Etown

Belfry vs. O'Cath

Russell vs. O'Cath

3 championships.... less than 15 total passes combined

Awesome observation

Someone has an axe to grind. Ask Elizabethtown if Belfry needed to throw a pass to win the state title a few years back.

At least in 2A that has held true to a lesser extent in other classes. That said though, it takes serious talent and depth on the line and in the backfield in order to win it all in 4A or 3A to get away with passing that little in a title game.

Now that you mention it:

1A

2003 Danville

2004 Beechwood

3A

2004 Highlands (Jet SWEEP!)

4A

2004 St. X

2004 was definately the year of the running game.... and proof in point that a passing game is overrated if you are truly dominant at what you do.

You can win without a great passing game. But you have to be able to run the ball. That article was total BS!

The answer to the orginal question is YES!

Unless OCath or Caldwell Co. can make an great run, I see these two teams playing for the rights to represent the West.

Man I was way off if you hadn't shown me the light, I don't know what I would have done.

However I shall refrain from further comment as that is not important to the topic of this thread...

If the two were to meet, would the be playing at Western or at Mercer?

Captain sarcasm...slow your roll.

Wasn't saying that every year the team with the best running game will win state... just validating the fact that no matter what class, no matter what year, it is not a prerequisite to be a great passing team.

With that being said, all the teams who have won the title without a passing game all share the common entity that they had great line play, solid talent in the backfield, and a defense that matched their physical style and could shut down the opposing defense (which you actually hit the nail on the head).

I know Trinity fans have a short fuse...but geez! LOL:thumb:

Sorry didn't want to come off that way. I am sarcastic in casual conversation too, wasn't offended just offerring a differing point of view.

In most of the teams that I mentioned though they had solid running games as well in addition to their passing games. I know in many cases those teams that you mentioned had decent passing games to go along with their strong running games and excellent defenses.

Balance is extremely important or at least a semblance of balance. I did watch Belfry win in 03 and 04 and am aware that they threw a total of about 5 passes in the two games. :thumb:

Agreed... for example in the teams I listed if you take the Highlands state title team as well as the X team in 2004... if those teqams opted to be passing teams with the athletes they had then no doubt they could have been successful... win the state titke as a passing team? no....

I honestly feel that balance never hurts..in fact one of the biggest upsides to Belfry this season is their Soph QB who has the potential to actually complete passes.... but I honestly think a team that is 95% run can cope better on the HIGH SCHOOL level and on the whole be more successful than a team who is 95% pass. There is just more margin of error that can occur when you are putting the ball in the air that much..plus a predominant running team dictates game tempo and fatigue.

To tie back to the conversation: If Mercer has the horses to not require a passing game then the Casey County writer will be eating crow.. but just some food for thought...

Excellent point.

it would be a great match up between to good teams and two good friends - Jaggers of MC and Preston on Western

I'm sure the sportswriter from Casey Co. Ky. is imminently qualified to report on what it takes to win a State Championship.

Maybe 66-19 was not convincing enough.

Newsflash......Mercer has a passing game. If you would like to see it, all you have to do is one simple thing....stop the run.

Joe, you are right as always:D Russell, last year did pretty good without a huge passing game.

High School football is always about the run. Casey's sportswriter could be correct, that Mercer won't win it this year, but lack of a passing game will not be the cause.

Casey sportswriter should comment on Casey's on troubles, Casey's kids tried hard, but they have a whole lot of work to do.
