I noticed Jim Matney from Belfry on the list. Is this Johnson Central's coach?

Yep. Matney's a Belfry guy. Ten years ago, I would have pegged him to be Haywood's successor. But now, given Haywood's longevity and what Matney's built at JC, the odds are probably against it ever happening.

ATL, out of curiosity, what do you think about my thoughts above?

I don't think it will happen for a few reasons.

1. I think you are tracking correctly with your thoughts. Matney is no spring chicken any more and he is in a really good spot at JC.

2. Belfry will respect Haywood's legacy once he departs. Haywood has always been loyal to his assistants and his assistants have been loyal to him. There have been many an Assistant who easily could have taken a position elsewhere that never would even consider parting with the Belfry program.

I expect that Haywood will have a successor in mind and his main wish will be to try and keep the family together after he is gone. Belfry will honor that wish if it is made.

Contrary to the fact that Matney is a "Belfry Guy", he did not play for Haywood or Coach under Haywood.

3. Matney has an unique personality (some will say "Well Duh!"). He is not the kind of guy who strikes me as wanting the keys to the corvette. He has always been more of the guy who wants to take the car from the junk yard and re-build it and make it better than brand new so he can tell you all about it LOL. Matney always has that little bit of a chip on his shoulder.. he uses this as a positive and is one of the most driven people you will find. He relishes the underdog role.

I think Belfry may be "too easy" for his personality. The only thing that he can do that Haywood hasn't already done is make Belfry a National Powerhouse. Let's be honest... that's not a realistic option.
