Nice win for Phelps. They are dramatically improved.

Turnmire grabs 4 INT's in the win

Just looking at the schedule, I think this team can finish above .500, which would be the first time since 1998. I'm pulling for the Hornets.

Is Coach Jones back with the team yet?

Congrats to the Hornets!

Yes he has been back for a couple weeks

Phelps also won this despite losing their stud Freshman back Dom Francis on the first drive.

Hopefully the injury isn't serious but that kid can play and will only help them

Phelps 32 East Ridge 8

If memory serves me correctly, the first time I ventured to Pikeville was 1998 and the Phelps would have a nice season going 7-3 on the season. East Ridge was not even around back then. The 2017 Phelps team might be able to achieve those types numbers and with an up and coming head coach in David Jones, a former Belfry great the sky could be the limit.

The clock showed 9:42 left in the quarter, when Garrett Clevenger took off on a 10-yard run, giving the Hornets a first down and kept their drive going. Then just :25 later Dylon New picked up14-yards by following his lineman and going straight up the gut of the East Ridge defense. Facing a 3rd and six, with under 8:00 left Clevenger broke a tackle headed left and was not stopped, until he had picked up 18-yards. The 11-plays, 78-yard drive ended with a Clevenger 11-yard touchdown pass to Seth Mayhorn. A two point conversion pass was swatted down by Taylor Kane. The scored was 6-0, with a little over six minutes left in the quarter

At the 4:36 mark of the quarter,Brandon Turnmire of the Hornets picked off a Kane Taylor pass, to get the ball back for Phelps. The quarter ended without any more scoring.

Clevenger would bobble a snap from center, with 11:55 left in the 2nd quarter, causing the ball to hit the turf and then be recovered by the Warriors Mickey Thompson, at the East Ridge 3-yard-line.

At the 8:54 mark Turnmire was tackled by the Warriors Taylor but not before he had picked up 13-yards, to give the Hornets another first down. Peyton Rife would be taken down by the Warriors #33 Ryan Haynes for a short loss. The East Ridge defense continued to play well and with 7:04 left Seth Ferguson batted down a Hornets pass and force a 4th and 10. Phelps elected to go for it on 4th and ten and the call turned out to be good, because Clevenger ran for the first down, with 6:56 left. The six-play, forty three drive ended with a Rife breaking a tackle, reversing the field, to score from 11-yards out. The score remained 12-0 after a two point run was stopped by the Warriors, with 6:13 left.

With 5:58 left in the half, the Hornets recovered a fumble by the Warriors, Haynes. I did not see who made the recovery and neither did the P.A.guy. The drive came to a quick halt thanks to a nice job by the Warriors defense.

Taylor was tackled for a 7-yard loss by #20 Eli Jones, with 2.38 left.

The Hornets offense was back in business just a few seconds later.

First Clevenger connected with Rife on a screen pass that covered 27-yards and gave the Hornets a first and ten at their own forty-four-yard-line, with 2:00 left. Then Clevenger hit Kendrick Prater #2 for a 22-yard gain. The NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN player of the game Garrett Clevenger would pick up 14-yards at the 51.4 mark of the quarter. Clevenger would carry two more times on the drive, the first netted 7-yards and took the ball to the Warriors 1-yard-line,. From there he scored to make this a 18-0 game, The point after kick from, New gave the Hornets a 19-0 lead, with 27.2 second left.

With 7.1 left in the half, it appeared that Taylor had scored on a fine 57-yard run, where he broke a tackle and broke to his left, but a took the ball back to the 25-yard-line.

9:52 remained when New picked up 28-yards on a nice run where he was tackled by Taylor. Phelps ended the 6-play,58-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run by New, who used the work of his offensive line to go right up the gut of the Warriors defense. This made the score 25-0. with 8:39 left in the third.

Back at it again, with 5:07 left in the quarter New would go up the middle for a 23-yard run.

Cameron Hess would sack New for a big loss, as the Warriors defense was trying desperately to get the ball back to their offense, with 3:48showing on the clock.

The Warriors offense would find success through the air, when Taylor connected with CJ Branham, for a 31-yard gain. A nice tackle by Corey Collie stopped any more damage from being done, with 1:40 left. The drive came to a sudden stop when,Turnmire picked off a Taylor pass and took it back to the Warriors 27-yard-line, with 1:12 remaining.

The Hornets ground game would sting the Warriors at the 1:06 mark of the quarter when, New went up the gut for an 18-yard pick up. A fumble by the Hornets, Clevenger was recovered by the Warriors Hunter Ferran to end the drive, with just 10.4 left in the quarter.

The final stanza would see both teams score once.

The Hornets would go up 32-0 on a New 1-yard run and a point after kick by who other than New.

The Warriors escaped being shut out when, Taylor broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown and a two point conversion play was good from Branham, making the final score 32- 8 Phelps.
