Depends on the circumstances. Early in the non-district schedule on a beautiful night in front of the first real night game crowd there is no reason to go for 2 in that situation.

 

In playoffs on a cold night with a tough game coming up the next week.......then you can bet they would go for 2 and get out of there as quick as possible.

There has been a mercy rule since early 2000's but 36 since 2013 I believe. Dale retired from coaching after the 2013 season.

I think it was simply to extend the game and allow the less experienced players some field time. Kinder, gentler...probably had something to do with the call as well.

I don't like the mercy rule. Let the backups in a blowout get some time on the field. Coaches should know when to pull the starters. It shortens the game for the other kids. The score will just be what it's going to be.
