There is nothing routine about this at all. Absolutely no place for this sort of exercise.

Having high school kids carry a 400lb pole over their heads as a conditioning drill is as stupid as it gets. Like I said earlier in the thread, if this was an attempt at team building then there are much better safer ways of accomplishing that, from a conditioning stand point as well as team building. The coach is an idiot and at the very least lose his job. He has no business working with kids.
