Mississippi Police Raid Wrong Home, Kill Occupant

Featured Replies

Does that occur at 11:30 at night?

Also what about all the warning signs that there was a dog on the property?

Serious question though, if someone is trespassing on your property, do you have a right to turn your dog loose on them?

To the bolded dont ever put those signs up, you will be liable if your dog does attack or bite someone, by having the signs, you acknowledge that you have a violent dog. (whether they are or aren't)

Not getting into the specifics of this case since there are too many unknowns, but trespassing laws vary by state and it is not as cut/dry as putting a toe on someone's property counting as trespassing. Obviously if there was no trespassing signs up, that is one thing. But I don't believe most consider walking up and knocking on someone's door as trespassing. With the dog question, I would say the onus would be on the owner.

In KY I believe this is the case, now the moment you tell them to leave and they dont, they are considered trespassing.

Who do you think is more likely to lie in this situation? The family of the innocent man who was killed or the cops that screwed up and killed an innocent man?

So you automatically assume they police murdered him and are covering it up?

All I've done is questioned the one side of this story that's been presented and ask of home owner has a requirement to restrain thier dog. If the families story is true I'm sure the officer will be held accountable.

Would you agree that it's not even debatable that the cops royally screwed up?

They screwed up and are trying to save their butts IMO.

I'll also add that even if he did have a gun when he answered the door, that he was well within his rights. It's his house, 11:30 at night and people are knocking at his door. He has a right to defend himself in his own home.

I agree with you 100%.

Rarely does this happen, everyone check for snow tomorrow.

They knocked on the wrong door, this wasn't a raid as the misleading title said. So knocking on the wrong door when looking for someone is a "Royal Screw Up"?

The police have released very little about this so far and we don't know exactly what happened, seems a little premature to call it a cover up.

Yes he had every right to have a gun in his hand answering his door. If he raised it to the police or refused to put it down then we'd have another issue.

There are too many unknowns at this point to make a clear determination.

Someone knocks on your door at 11:30 at night. You go to the door with a gun and your dog. You open the door and your dog runs out and whoever is outside fires a gun. You aren't raising your gun?

And yes they royally screwed up. They served a warrant at 11:30 pm at night to the wrong house and an innocent man ended up dead. What else would you call that?

NOT COMPARING TO THIS CASE BUT....

I don't have a problem with an 11:30 pm warrant being served. You go where you think the criminal is and when you think he/she will be there.

They didn't serve a warrant they were looking for someone.

If I see police officers, no I'm not raising my gun. But I'm also not turning my pit bull lose on someone knocking on my door either.

Interesting point here, at 11:30pm what are you really seeing in the dark? Did police acknowledged themselves? If they didnt and just knocked on the door, door opens, dog runs out, dog gets shot, owner raises gun due to shots fired..........no acknowledgement that its police, cant see a thing in the dark.

Im one of the biggest police supporters on this site......this doesnt look good, doesnt smell good, doesnt taste good.

I've never seen the police knock on a door and not announce they were the police. It doesn't sound like it was a SWAT team dressed in green or black but regular officers in uniform.

I always turn on the light when I open the door at night, I wonder if this guy did?

I don't have an issue with them doing it at that time either.

I'm simply saying it's 11:30 at night, I'm not surprised if the guy took a gun with him to answer the door at that time of the night.

If someone is knocking on your door at 11:30PM and it worries you enough to get your gun and dog, would you not turn on lights inside and out? Also would you not verify who the heck is at the door before you open it?

If this guy went to the door, not lights on, opened it and let his dog loose, then his dog being shot is on him.

I would as well. But again, I'm turning on every light I can and making dang sure who is at the door before opening it.
