Covington Catholic roster

Recommended Posts

So just how many schools need 8th graders to field teams? I will give you the smaller schools Dayton, Silver Grove and the like but the Ryle's, SK, Dixie etc? Sorry just because the kid is good, he needs to wait his turn. Never have I see a Prom Queen or a Student Council member not attending HS. HS sports? For HS students!

I may be wrong but I think Ryle needs middle school kids to fill out their freshman team. As far as I know they always have a good amount of middle school players on that team.

No, 8th graders can't play varsity at all so unless it was a new program starting off with just JV that shouldn't be a possibility. However if you have to cut a potential entire other teams worth of players because you can't field a JV team without 7th and 8th graders that is a pretty big loss with regard to developing a program.

Bingo.

I don't get this "waiting their turn" nonsense. There are no turns. Nobody is entitled to making a team on a given year. The JV kids who would usually be cut at most programs actually get an opportunity to play with the addition of middle school players. Seems to me that giving more opportunities to high school students supports the stance of "high school sports are for high school kids". However I don't think you should start cutting high school kids who can play just for better middle school players. That's different than what we are discussing here though.

HS sports are intended for HS kids and I won't change my mind and I am sure neither will some of you but.....it is the way I feel and have always felt.

I will concede the point of the smaller schools to fill out a Frosh roster but honestly, I don't care one bit about the kid in the 8th Grade being a super star, he can wait his turn.

Were these your same thoughts when CVH first suited up for Cov Cath?

CVH played for Villa in his 8th grade year while attending grade school and didn't play for CovCath until his Freshman year.

As did Jacob Litzler in baseball for Villa....then CCH freshman

Main point....and has always been my point......if one HS student is cut...then no NON HS Students should make the team. .....

......but.....if no one is cut and non HS student make the team, they all compete for spots......

If this is true, I received some bad info about where he played his 8th grade year.

I take it that you feel he should have been playing on the 8th grade team at Villa that year, possibly the Freshman team if they needed middle school kids to make a team.

Yes it is true!

CVH never attended Villa, he was a student at Blessed Sacrament in Ft. Mitchell when he played for Villa and yes, I think he should have played for the 8th grade team at Blessed Sacrament.

In my opinion, this is a perfect example of why a younger player should not have to wait his turn. He definitely performed well enough as an 8th grader to warrant a spot on the Varsity team. I would also argue that being able to play Varsity for 5 seasons helped his overall development much more than if he would have been made to play on a middle school team as an 8th grader.

Additionally, whether or not one thinks that a talented 8th grader should/should not "wait their turn", there is going to be a team who will benefit from that freshmen player's resume, which included playing up as an 8th grader.

If we are to allow kids to play at what ever level they can no matter their age or grade in part to help their development and gain overall experience, why should this be limited to sports? Clearly there are 8th, 7th and possibly 6th graders capable of holding their own academically at the HS level. What about the performing arts, band, etc. Why not simply allow any and all kids to attend what ever grade level they can? After all what better place to gain development and experience then academically.

We don't allow this for many good reasons, then why allow it for a select few who can pick and choose a HS school to play for while attending a middle school.

I'm on the side of HS athletics should be played by HS students only.

CVH honed his skills on the AAU circuit and I doubt playing bball for Villa had all that great of an effect on his overall game. Put me in the camp of high school sports being for kids that are in high school. It's a high school team, for high school students. If Thomas More has problems filling their roster out should we supplement with students from CCH and NCC?

I am not OK with a Middle School kid playing for a HS that they do not plan on attending the following year, this just doesn't not seem right to me.

Maybe the academia world actually has it figured out...

- Many schools offer HS level classes to 7th and 8th graders.

- Most schools allow HS students to take college level classes.

- There is also the possibility of skipping MS all together.

Taking HS level classes while in middle school and college level classes while still in HS, you are still surrounded and socializing with your own age. Schools such as Covington Latin that allow kids to skip the 7th and or 8th grades, you wind up being in HS school with kids with your own age. The very important social aspects of playing HS sports while being a middle schooler and how this could negatively effect the middle schooler may be getting lost.

This just isn't true universally. Some schools allow high school students to actually take college courses on the college campus with other college students. And one of the schools that I know that does this is an extremely high performing academic school, maybe the best in the state.

And we actually do allow this academically. Why do you think there are 15 year olds with college degrees in this country? There are avenues for the exceptional to fast track their education.

I still have yet to hear a reasonable argument for why middle school kids shouldn't be allowed to play high school athletics. The ol "high school sports are for high school kids" argument is extremely shallow.
