June 7, 20179 yr Reading KSR this morning and there was an excerpt from a newspaper article about a Mark Stoops discussion with Matt Elam. Stoops says pretty much it's up to Matt to do the things he supposed to do. Is this finally the year that Elam lives up to his hype? For me I feel like he's the typical, never had to work very hard, doesn't like challlenges and lacks any self discipline type high school player. From everything I've read, he does what is asked while he is at school but he lacks the self discipline to keep him self in football shape while on his own. Stoops seems to almost be begging this young man to keep it together. I'd assume had Elam went to Alabama that he would either have shaped up or been shipped out in less than the four years he's had with the Cats.
June 7, 20179 yr I don't see it happening, but I would love to be pleasantly surprised come the fall.

He has one final chance to show he's serious about football and too possibly make a living playing it.
June 7, 20179 yr The Bulldog family will always love Matt, but most of us already knew as much about his work ethic. Matt would not have lasted long at Bama and Matt knew that. I hope he gets it together and get on the field this year.
June 7, 20179 yr This is what is wrong with Kentucky football IMO. Fall in love with the press clippings and not really evaluating the kid and his makeup. Only saw the kid play one game live and thought there was no way he could/would play at Alabama, but Kentucky was more than willing to take him.
June 7, 20179 yr Author Could we argue that since IT IS Kentucky football they have to take chances on players like Elam who you could hope is a diamond in the rough? Where as Alabama has ten more like him begging to go their?

Nick Saban made a couple of visits to Etown recruiting Matt. He had/has the potential to be really good, but again most people around the program knew Matt's work ethic so UK was a no brainer. When you are a big fish in a little pond in some of the smaller communities in KY it is hard to bring it everyday and put in the required work/rest/sacrifice that it takes to compete at the highest next level. Matt was always told he was good and he proved it on Friday nights....he just didn't know how to prepare for playing on Saturday's in the SEC.
June 7, 20179 yr Good size does mean something. Fat size doesn't. If you can't move, you are not effective.
