Service Line Warranties

I keep getting letters from this company and it appears they have some kind of partnership with the city I live in. Essentially the letter says for $5.75 a month it will cover water service line buried underground on my property. It provides coverage up to $4,000 per covered incident with no deductibles. Has anyone signed up for this type of thing. Is it worth it?

This is like the 10th letter I have gotten from them.

From what I've seen, it depends. Typically, I don't pay for warranties. However, depending on your situation the $120 a year MAY be worth it. First, if you have a newer home or are planning to move in the next several years, I'd probably pass. But, if you have an older home, or have a situation where you have trees in your front yard near your lines, it may be worth considering, especially if those pipes have never been replaced. These repairs are not cheap, and they are usually on the homeowner to take care of. If you have a lot of neighbors that have had to do this type of repair, I think it might be worth considering, especially since it's so cheap.

Call your city, I will bet the city has no partnership. The city will probably tell you it's a scam. When I moved to my residence 8 years ago, I got them and the city told me not to.

If something goes wrong and it is the water companies fault or some other entity, they will be responsible.

Unless there is something different you are getting.

Only from the meter to the street. Meter to the house is your responsibility.

I would check your homeowner's insurance as well to see if you are already covered.

Insurance policies typically do not cover the cost to repair that part of the plumbing system which fails but rather cover the resulting damage due to any water that escapes from the plumbing system. In most circumstances it would be unlikely that insurance would pay to repair damage to an underground water line.

That being said, most warranties of this type usually turn out to be worth less than the cost of the paper that they are written on. I would suggest not buying the warranty.

I'm guessing this may be legitimate. Just a quick Google search shows this company does have partnerships with many cities throughout the country.

Yes I did also. Must have been something else on this type of thing I was thinking

Generally, I do agree with your line of thinking on this. This would raise a big red flag for me, and I'm generally not a fan of purchasing any warranty. But I can see how this particular one could be useful in certain situations.

That was my line of thinking as well. I haven't noticed anyone in my neighborhood having issues with this and I have only 1-2 trees in my yard up front. I don't foresee this being an issue, but $5 a month isn't much to have some level of protection.
