School Shooting in CA

Featured Replies

Domestic situations are still the most volatile to encounter, nothing worse than a man or woman scorned.

Terribly sad. Prayers for that community. Senseless on so many levels.

Another gun free zone, beat in this case its not even about that. Our education system doesnt give two sticks about the safety of its employees or its students. They let this guy sign in and walk away through the school. No metal detector, no pat down, nothing just walk on in. Until schools take security seriously it will keep happening. People need to wake up and demand that school districts take this stuff seriously.

We go to a sporting event, there are hundreds of security guys, but we cant get one security guy at the front door of schools. Sure there is a resource officer, that spends most all his day dealing with unruly students.

I think you are making sense. What I believe must have happened though is that this newlywed Husband checked in to see his wife with something she needed. The check-in person did not know they were estranged or anything was out of the ordinary. Let him in like they do at my wife's school when I stop by.

It's a tragedy all around.

If they were estranged or there were some big issues, she should have alerted the school to ensure that he wouldn't be let in.

That was my thinking. They had only been married about 3 or 4 months. They were estranged and she had moved out.

That is not the issue at all. Zero security at the school. This is what you get.

There wasn't zero security was there? It was insufficient security.

My understanding was he explained his presence as bringing his wife something she needed and then he was allowed in.

For example, at my wife's school. All exterior doors are locked and only badge access allows the doors to open. To visit the guest has to buzz in and be seen by the office staff. If they don't recognize the person they ask their purpose. If they do recognize he/she is buzzed into lobby. From there they have to check in at the office in order to be buzzed through the locked doors that separate the lobby from the kids classes.

And that is what they call "security." Its a great system isnt it, just walk on in and stroll on through. Dont empty your pockets, dont go through a metal detector, dont get patted down, just stroll on through. Works well doesnt it.

Even if there was a school resource officer standing there, he would have had no reason to suspect a teacher's husband would be a threat unless she had told them. Schools do need to be secure but they can not operate like a prison. One of the best things about a school is the family atmosphere that exist between the faculty and their extended families.

Are you advocating pat down searches of all visitors, parents, spouses, bus drivers, cooks, custodians and students daily as they enter the building?

Meece (your favorite middle school) has a two door system to get in and you have to be "Buzzed" in after they verify who you are and your business at the school...but even that in this case wouldn't have stopped what happened as all schools would have allowed the spouse of a teacher to enter...UNLESS there was a reason not to allow them access. If she thought he was or could be a problem she should have alerted the school not to let him in, plain and simple.

It has at her school. They also drill a couple of times a year for various emergency scenarios.

How hard is it to empty pockets and go through a metal detector?

Does anyone think there is enough money in the budgets for every public school to have functioning metal detectors, especially in a cash strapped state like California?

Or Kentucky?
