April 4, 20179 yr So now Ole Roy has passed the legendary Dean Smith on the championship list, Dean 2-3 and Roy now 3-3. Everyone hypes Dean Smith as the greatest when he retired, but he 5-6 in the Final four with only two titles. Roy now has three titles in 14? Seasons at UNC while it took Dean quite a bit longer. If Dean was coaching these days would people still idolize him for winning games and making Final Fours or roast him for quite often losing the big game? Roy was accussed of not being able to get it done at Kansas, but as Bill Self maybe can attest to, is it just the Kansas curse? Seems Ole Roy can flat out get it done in the big one at UNC where his mentor seemed to struggle.
April 4, 20179 yr It's more that just about coaching, and Smith was one of the greats at that as well. Smith's players LOVED and respected him like no other. I'm not sure it goes quite that deep with Roy. Smith, all day every day. Oh, and by the way, as far as coaching, Ol' Roy learned pretty much everything at the knee of Smith. He recruits similar and plays a similar style.
April 4, 20179 yr Author I guess my argument (I'm a UK diehard FYI) is that Roy has accomplished more in terms of NCAA Titles in half the time. Sure maybe Deans players loved him but he also "only" won two Titles while retiring with the most wins ever. Also if Dean Smith coached in today's era how much grief would he get for making alot of Final fours and finals but, again "only" winning two titles" while having some of the best teams of the 90s. Dean learned from Phog Allen, so it's not like he was some dude that didn't have anyone to lean on
April 4, 20179 yr As a Carolina fan you love he foundation that Dean laid. But he struggled in the big game and it's not a secret. Won a ton of games. But Roy has taken crap for so long about not being able to win the big one. His first title at Carolina was because they players "weren't his", his second was because it was a "down year in college hoops". Now this one is because of the refs. Give me Roy all day.

The only time at UNC I was shocked by their performance with Roy at the helm was the way they were destroyed by Kansas in the 2008 Final Four. I remember the heat was on Ol Roy then but he shut them up the next year.
April 4, 20179 yr Roy and it ain't close IMO. Agreed, can't argue with the results. 3 titles since 2005 is pretty strong.

They came out flat and went down 41-12 and the rest was history

I look at Dean Smiths career as I grew up during his tenure and thought he was one of the most overrated coaches. 2 titles in over 30 years didn't impress me.
April 4, 20179 yr What is kind of ironic is that around was getting the same comments about him while at Kansas as Dean got at UNC, couldn't win when it counted etc. Roy had great teams at Kansas but couldn't finish and then goes to UNC and then and only then does he win.
