I never heard that they wrote it as a response to the song "Alabama", but to the song "Southern Man", but maybe it was both. :idunno:

Wow never knew that...thanks because I've gone all these years thinking that it was just "Southern Man", but after looking at the lyrics for "Alabama" it would stand to reason.

On the 1998 self-titled album by the Old Dogs (Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis, Bobby Bare and Waylon Jennings), they redo this one, and also have another one called "Me and Jimmie Rodgers." All songs were written by the great Shel Silverstein.

The Neil Young-Skynyrd dynamic is a complicated one that fans just didn't totally get. Both were big fans of each other. Ronnie Van Zant wore a "Tonight's The Night" concert T in some of the most famous live concert footage of Skynyrd (Knebworth Festival in England, I believe).

 

Allegedly, Neil wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd. Then the plane crash happened and he used it on "Rust Never Sleeps" in 1979 (recorded from 1978 concerts with most of the audience noise taken out of the mix). Also allegedly, Neil was an honorary pallbearer for Ronnie's funeral.

Don't know if this counts. "Sniper" by Harry Chapin tells the story of Charles Whitman who was the Sniper in the Texas Tower in Austin back in 1966. It's not his name but the song shares the story and also a perspective of his troubled life.
