July 20, 20215 yr Our former coach Ian Lynch (Bellevue KY) won gold in 2016 and bronze in 2012 for wheelchair basketball at the Paralympics.

July 20, 20215 yr Author Willis A. Lee from Natlee, KY (town was named for his grandfather Nathaniel W. Lee who operated the Natlee Distillery there in the late 1800s.) Willis Lee was an Owenton High Schoo grad, now consolidated into Owen County High School. US Naval Academy Class of 1904. Competed in 14 events in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, winning 5 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal - more than any other Kentuckian. Shortly following Pearl Harbor, Lee's rank was elevated to rear admiral, making him Assistant Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet, second only to Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King. Lee died in 1945 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery, which sits on property once owned by Confederate General Robert E. Lee, a distant relative.

July 20, 20215 yr Author 1989 Russell High School grad Sean Shumate was a member of the USA Paralympics Team, competing in Fencing in 2004 Athens Games. He also served as an official Fencing Referee in the 2012 London Paralympics and the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

Sam Bowie was also on that team, but he was from Pennsylvania.
July 23, 20215 yr Author Nat Cartmell was born in Union Co, KY. He was captain of the duPont Manual football team and track team...graduated in 1903. He won 2 silver medals in the 1904 St. Louis Olympics before starting at Penn State, and then won gold and bronze medals in the 1908 London Olympics. He was briefly the track coach at Penn State before heading to take over as track coach at the University of North Carolina, where he also became the first ever head coach of the UNC Tarheels basketball team. He had several other college head coaching stops in track and basketball.
July 23, 20215 yr Author Will Hunter was a a teammate of Nat Cartmell in the 1904 Olympics as well as at Manual. Hunter graduated from Manual in 1901 and competed in 3 track and field events in the 1904 St. Louis games.
July 23, 20215 yr Author Ellen McGrath Owen is a 1981 Louisville Male grad. She was the KHSAA 1m Diving Champ in 1980 & 1981, and at the University of Alabama she was the 1985 SEC Champ off the 3m board. The 2x All-American competed in platform diving in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, coming out from 5 years retirement from diving to train for the US Olympic trials.
July 23, 20215 yr Author Megan Kleine is a 1993 Henry Clay High School grad who earned a gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as a part of the US women's 4×100m medley relay team. She also swam in the 100m breaststroke event. She swam for the University of Texas after high school.
