Wayne County outlasts Garrard County, 51-38 to claim the title at Lincoln County. Great run by both teams. Wayne only having to play 3 games, while Garrard had to play 4.

Wayne looked solid. By the final, Garrard looked about out of gas. Both teams have bright futures.

There was a 13 team bracket. I know Wayne beat Lincoln and Garrard beat Somerset in the semifinals. Garrard beat East Jessamine in the first round and beat Southwestern in the quarterfinals.

Wayne beat Danville

Since Wayne just had to play 3 games I'm guessing that made a difference in the 13 point loss they handed out in the finals? Wayne returned home late from a road trip to Catholic Friday night and then traveled back to Lincoln Saturday morning. If I recall correctly they also beat Catholic, give the program some credit!

Wayne has a bright future! Don't count them out.

 

Did Wayne play their kids that play a lot of varsity time down in this tourney too? I know they did in the freshman tourney I am just curious.

Sorry, but these tournaments just don't mean too much. I think players are allowed to play on JV through their junior seasons. Obviously, the better ones don't, most playing meaningful varsity minutes as freshmen or at least as sophomores.

 

If it were truly a sophomore and below tournament, and all regional teams played all of their soon and below kids, then it would be more representative of a team's future. But, they don't. It's apples for one team playing oranges for the other team.

Pretty sure Garrard played all sophomores and freshmen and 1 junior. Think Wayne also played all Freshmen and Sophomore. Not sure about the other teams. Not many JV teams play juniors anymore. So, it is basically a sophomore and freshmen loaded teams now days.

And the one junior for Garrard was a young man who had transferred mid-season and was just ruled eligible on Thursday. I can't speak for the other teams, but every player on the Garrard roster had played a majority of the JV games (although three of them have played varsity minutes during the season).

I don't think anyone is hanging banners for a JV regional championship win (h/t Tom Crean) but I think putting kids into win-or-go-home tournament atmospheres is good for younger players.

Nope, not around here in my area. Jr.'s populate team rosters quite heavily and can play significant minutes. I have seen games where there are 6-7 Jr.'s on the floor at one time between both teams. Now not saying that is the norm, but I have seen it multiple occasions. As a matter of fact I started a thread a few weeks back stating the opinion that I didn't think Jr.'s should be playing varsity under normal/most circumstances unless a small school needed 1 or 2 to put a team on the floor and allow another team to get games in. That wasn't a popular opinion with some, but it's my opinion.

West Jess had 5 juniors playing JV all year, including in this tournament. Out in round 1.
