Super Regional Plan

Featured Replies

I've recently been thinking about how to best implement the Super-Regional format for basketball throughout the state. There have been numerous proposals that used power ratings, standings, draws, etc. but none seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I've developed a plan that may not appeal to all, but might work. A few points to start:

1. District tournaments as they exist would be eliminated.

2. Regular season district standings would be used to seed the bracket (this would require all districts to play a round-robin [one or two games] to set district standings.

3. Bracket would be drawn, but with district winners getting the best spot on the bracket, second place finishers next best, etc.

4. District regular season champions would automatically be in the final eight, while all others would have to play one or two games to make it to the final eight.

5. No district opponents could play each other until the regional semifinals (with exception of a possible 1st vs. 5th/6th in the quarterfinals if two upsets)

5. First and second round play-in games could be played either on campus or at a neutral site

6. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals would all be played just as they currently are.

7. There would be two weeks to play the tournament (taking the existing district and region week) and girls and boys could both be played at the same time. My scheduling plan (below) would not require any team to play back-to-back nights.

My proposed schedule for tournament:

Monday - Girls first round (at highest seeds)

Tuesday - Boys first round (at highest seeds)

Wednesday - Girls second round (at highest seeds)

Thursday - Boys second round (at highest seeds)

Friday/Saturday - Girls quarterfinals (at neutral location)

Monday/Tuesday - Boys quarterfinals (at neutral location)

Wednesday - Girls semifinals (at neutral location)

Thursday - Boys semifinals (at neutral location)

Friday - Girls championship (at neutral location)

Saturday - Boys championship (at neutral location)

Below are brackets for 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, 19-, and 20-team tournaments. These brackets assume each district would have the same amount of teams (which is obviously not true) and would be adjusted to make sure no district opponents meet until the regional semifinal if higher seeds always prevail.

I'm in. I know you personally. We are on the same wavelength. I love the current setup but any setup that you create I am 100% for. Are you, can you or will you submit this to KHSAA for discussion?

I'm with you - I think the current setup is perfect and I don't want to see it change.

However, if one region is going to change then all should. It isn't right or fair for the 15th Region (or any other) to play by a different format than the others. This plan is a reasonable solution if (and/or when) the decision is made to go to super-regional tournaments.

One other note. The bracket design avoids matchups pitting 1-seeds against hopelessly overmatched 4- or 5-seeds. This should allow for more competitive games throughout.

Maybe I wasn't looking correctly but on the PDF file for 16 team bracket I only saw bracket under the 16 team one for 12 teams.

I like the current set up, But if it was to go to a Super Regional instead of how it currently is I'm all in on your idea of how it would go.

Eight third and fourth place teams play in the first round, four second place teams start play in the second round, and four first place teams start in the third (quarterfinal) round. It's basically the same bracket used in the SEC tournament with some teams getting double-byes.

I agree 100%.

I tried to find an SEC type format bracket, to post in another thread.

I wanted to use 10th region teams.

I'm wasn't techy enough to figure it out.

Good job.

Haven't done a lot of research into this. (And I applaud you for what you've done!) However, off the cuff, I'm not so thrilled about the bolded, where a team gets an automatic ticket to the quarterfinals just because they "won the district" during regular season play. I mean, in theory, could you have a team could go 2-1 against their district opponents and go 0-20 against everyone else, and they'd get a double-bye? Am I understanding you correctly?

True, and that is perhaps a flaw. But teams win districts with bad overall records every year and thus get good draws in the region tournament.

If you mean if they win their district (tournament) and face a district runner-up, then yes, that could be considered "good". However, in the current format, they still have to play the same number of games as everyone else.

I agree there isn't a perfect way to set this up. Yes, there will be times a 3-4 will have to play a 1. I don't know that this would happen in most cases. However, being a 37th district fan, I can tell you there are times the 1 seed is happy if they don't have to play the 3 seed for the championship. So the chance of the 3 playing a 1 is there. I'm sure there are other districts that are the same.

I like this bracket the best, I suppose it's because it rewards the 1 and 2 seeds for their wins.
