DAYTON, Ky. (WKRC) - It's always a big rivalry basketball game, but Thursday night two schools put their differences aside to help a little girl.

 

Danielle Duke has an inoperable brain tumor. The 8-year-old's parents are Dayton Bellevue Firefighters. When the Dayton and Bellevue girls basketball teams played each other, they joined forces off the court to raise money for Danielle.

 

"It's been fabulous. Both schools have done very well. Our girls have exceeded my expectations a million percent . . . In this day and age it's really nice. With everything going on in the world, our girls and the Bellevue girls have really reached out to one another," says Steve Hunt, Dayton girls varsity basketball coach.

 

Danielle wasn't able to make it to the game, but her mom, Jennifer Duke, was there to thank the crowd for all the support. The teams hoped to raise a few thousand dollars through raffles and tee shirt sales.

 

There's a fundraiser this Saturday at the Holy Trinity Gymnasium in Newport from 7 p.m. until midnight to raise money for Danielle and her family.

And no mention of who won! That's what it's all about! Kudos to those players and administrators and prayers for the girl and her family!

My cousin Barb Lund was a big part of putting this together along with her sisters Susie and Kathy. Very proud of the work they have done. Dayton did win the game and the division 3 conference championship by defeating Bellevue 44-41. Channel 12 gave them a little coverage as well. Makes me proud of growing up in the little river communities of Dayton and Bellevue!

There is a group of girls right now at Dayton that are getting it done. Many of these girls play softball and that program is rising.....love to see this, small schools have it tough and when they stick together great memories can be created. Congrats to both schools...

Proud to be an employee of Dayton. Kids are working hard and doing a lot of good things on and off the athletic courts and fields.

Dayton has 2 fantastic people (and Im happy to call them friends) at the helm in Steve Hunt (girls hoops) and Beth Fields-Hunt (fastpitch).
