No offense, but plenty of teachers volunteer and put in extra time for free. Not as much as football coaches, but you know what you signed up for. Is $3000-$4000 really going to make it that much better? And there are plenty of head coaches across the state that would love a $7,400 stipend. They also teach full loads for $10,000-$15,000 less. I just don't buy the argument that money is the issue. If so, people should look to go into administration.

Interesting. I wonder what would happen if coaches across the state became "self-aware" and suddenly realized what they got themselves into.

Here is an interesting side note to this conversation. While discussing the merits of paying coaches, one also needs to look at the quality of product a well supported coach/team brings to the table. The quality of team directly reflect the fans in the stand, and the fans in the stands directly impact the financial income of the athletic department for that high school.

 

In the small county that I am in, without the income from the gate from football, our athletic department would be nearly non existent. We have two revenue sports which are football and boys basketball. All other sports lose money. Our funding from the BOE has been cut each and every year to the point where for the most part our athletic department has to be self funding.

 

Does it not make sense to support a coach such as Coach Scroggins financially in order to keep him. The product he put on the field led to several years worth of additional games that he was not compensated for but the school reaped the benefit from in regards to gate money and reciepts. If one only looks at a typical yearly gate of (guessing) $15,000 and figures that out over a solid 4 year run of added games due to playoffs, then that is an additional $60,000 that the program brought to the athletic department with no recognition or reward given back to the coach. Maybe my math is wrong and someone will straighten that part out but regardless, each school who has solid coaching and consistently puts quality product on the field and moves on through the playoffs MAKES MONEY. How do they justify not paying those who got them there?

And Seneca might have some of the worst facilities of any of the JCPS schools.

 

I went by Seneca back in the fall (I had never been there before) and was wowed by how bad the facilities and even the building looked. I don't say this to be critical, but rather to point out that from an outsiders perspective it doesn't appear they have spent a dime on that place in 20 years.

Unfortunately JCPS lives by the one salary fits all approach. No exceptions can be made. The best teachers in the district are paid on the same scale as the worst. Any time any form of merit pay is proposed JCTA fights it. The same philosophy is in play for coaching. The head football coach at Shawnee is paid the same salary as the head coach from Male.

Merit pay would not work in JCPS, the students have more to do with test scores then the teachers. Some of the best teachers in the district work at the worst schools. The Male, Manual, and Browns of JCPS have students who work in and out of the class room and have parents who care. The Shawnee, Iroquois, Doss etc.... are not starting with the same level of kids.

 

I bring this up because the same is for the talent level of the athletes, if a kid I a stud and is on Seneca's or westerns district they are probably not going to one of those schools but maybe a Ballard, PRP or Butler. Now this is not true for all of them but as they may get one or two good ones to stay home. With open enrollment you can not go to merit pay in the district.
