I hope that Conner can bounce back after the loss to Highlands but they have serious issues. They don't have a true point guard to get them into an offensive flow and quite honestly someone said it in the Highlands thread their offense looks like schoolyard play. They try to run dribble drive which usually ends up with someone chucking up a bad low percentage shot. If they are to be successful against Ryle they will have to turn them over with the press and make a resepectable percentage of their 3s and somehow find a way to make free throws. As RCC9 said they have a lot of good young talent but need some leadership to come from somewhere and I don't know where that could be. Maybe they just need to play some more good teams to find that out but helter skelter is not the answer. They need to play more under control on offense and when the other team gets the ball down against the press they need to buckle down and lock them down defensively and not give up easy shots and rebound misses.

I think this game has a lot to do with how much Scherr can go. Did they limit her play against the Camels because of this game coming up, or is she really not ready to go 100%. Maybe a little of both.

But with both teams at full strength, I would think this would be a nice battle. I'd think Conner is a little deeper, but Ryle sure has the athletes to stay with them if Conner doesn't play under control. A lot of "buddies" in this game too. Which team can put the "friend factor" behind them and beat the other's tail! LOL!

Agree with everything you say here. Was at the game against Highlands and it was exactly as you describe. Unfortunately the "dribble-drive" is now all the rage in high school ball. Most teams don't have the personnel to run it and it looks at times like pickup ball.

It can be effective when you have the athletes and skills to do it. I think Conner does and can do it. I just think they need to learn what "good" shots are and not that it's just "get to the basket". That's not a knock on them, it comes with experience. I think they also need to learn "who" should be taking the good shots. Not every kid is a scorer or should be shooting the ball as much as a different kid. It takes everyone to understand their role to win. Some kids are rebounders and defensive assets. You need to find the right balance.

I also agree that as they play good teams, they will will have to learn how to score and be efficient without relying on their press and outside shooting for points. Because when you run into teams that can handle the press, your scoring gets cut significantly. Then what do you do??? I think that's where they are right now. Again, all repairable with time, experience and coaching.

The 3 point shot has really changed how offenses are structured and how efficient an offense can be. As shooting has improved, defensive schemes have also had to evolve.

That said, a age-old basketball truism still exists IMO - especially for high school - that being a team should make more FTs than their opponent attempts.

Is this always a requirement to win? No. But - as an operating principle it certainly does protect a team from dying by the 3.

It's interesting when a losing coach says something along the lines of "our outside shots weren't falling, and we had a hard time scoring."

One-sided offensive strategies may win games - they will also lose games.
