2016-17 15th Region Season Preview

Featured Replies

15th Region Overview (Loaded 57th District Creates Top Heavy Region):

The Champion of the 15th Region will in all likelihood come from the 57th District this season as Johnson Central, Magoffin County, and Sheldon Clark all have solid ball clubs with multiple POY candidates. After those 3 there is a gap, but teams that can make noise include East Ridge, Pikeville, and Shelby Valley. Great coaching is one way you can close the gap as the season goes on and the 15th Region has plenty of those as well. Look for those in the middle of the pack to improve steadily over the course of the season and potentially pull an upset in post season play.

Luckily for the rest of the region, one of the top three teams will not advance out of district play, but you should expect a 57th District Championship rematch in the 15th Region Championship game. Needless to say, the 57th District regular season games will offer a packed house on any given night and will definitely worth the price of admission.

15th Region – Team Rankings (Last Season’s Record)

1. Johnson Central (20-13):

Head Coach Tommy McKenzie once again has the top ranked team in the region! Coming off six consecutive 20 win seasons and five consecutive trips to the regional finals (4-1), Johnson Central might have their best backcourt yet and one of the top guard duo’s in the state with Senior standout’s Mason Blair and Cole Crace. Blair achieved legendary status last year with a 30 point first quarter versus Belfry to go along with nine games of 30 or more to include three 40 point games. Blair also led the state in made 3FG’s (111). This summer, Blair started on the M.A.T.T.S Mustangs AAU Team that advanced to the national championship game. Playing against some the top talent in the nation night in and night out, Blair was able to hold his own, averaging well into double figures.

Running alongside Blair is the best all-around athlete JC has to offer in Cole Crace. Crace is fast personified, but he is also quick laterally. With an ability to play above the rim and finish through traffic with both hands, Crace is very difficult to stop when attacking the paint. With Blair on the perimeter commanding box and ones, lanes will be available for him to attack as he proved last season with seven 20 point plus games and five double doubles. Look for Crace to record a few triple doubles this season, but that’s not all he brings to the table. His on-ball defense is extremely good as he regularly gets the assignment of the other teams best player. The faster the game, the more Crace thrives and that’s what his defense does. It speeds up the game. It’s rare to find someone so talented that plays so hard, but Cole Crace is that kid. One of the most underrated players in the region.

Don’t think of the Golden Eagles as a two man show with Blair and Crace leading the way. JC has an experienced point guard running the team in Sophomore standout Jacob Rice and a 7’0’’ Center patrolling the paint in Leon Moshefy. With Blair scoring on the perimeter and Crace attacking the rim, Rice can provide the additional space needed to tear a team apart with his shooting and ability finish in the open court. More importantly, Rice can ice a tight game late with his dribbling and free throw shooting. Moshefy is a foreign exchange student from Germany who has a D1 body and improving game. Moshefy will get better as the season continues, only beginning to play basketball a few years ago in Europe. Like they say, however, “you cant teach seven feet tall” and Moshefy’s presence in the lane will create tons of blocked and altered shots. Likely to round out the starting 5 for the Golden Eagles is Senior guard Austin Davis. Davis plays extremely hard and always places winning and his teammates first. He can shoot and score when needed and brings tons of energy, effort, and positive emotion to a team.

Johnson Central is deep as well with Junior big man Dalton Collins, Sophomore swing player Gabe Farrell, and 8th grader Isaiah May coming off the bench. Collins has mastered the ability to take a charge (averaging 1.8 per game last season in limited time). Farrell is a lanky shooter that can play above the rim and create havoc with his wing span. May is the future POY in the 15th Region and one of the best 8th graders in the state (he plays above the rim with multiple in game dunks to his credit). Look for this bench to be explosive as all three could start on most teams.

Tommy McKenzie has a very talented, very deep team that will tough to deal with in the 15th Region this season.

Johnson Central Center Leon Moshefy stands nearly 7’0’’ and will patrol the middle for Johnson Central this season. The big man arrived at JC at only 16 years of age by way of Giessen, Germany!

2. Magoffin County (22-9):

The Magoffin County Hornets will look to improve on last year’s regional semifinal appearance and go to Rupp Arena for the first time in school history. This year they have the team to do it as some all-time greats are in their senior season with a strong supporting cast. Trenton Russell and Jaren Lovely will lead the way for the Hornets in a top heavy 57th District. Russell has been playing varsity since the 7th grade and will approach the 3,000 point mark by season’s end. He is very good at scoring in the post with excellent footwork, has great range beyond the arc, and rebounds well out of the 3 position. Lovey, a D1 baseball signee (Marshall), has also been on varsity since 7th grade and will approach the 2,000 point mark by season’s end. He has range two steps beyond the three point line but will also attack the rim if given the chance. The smooth lefty is an extremely good athlete and the best ball handler at the point guard position. Together Russell and Lovely are fun to watch as they can beat a team by themselves on most nights.

Magoffin County is more than just the Trenton Russell and Jaren Lovely show as they return a strong supporting cast that keeps teams honest. In the post is Junior Ryan Mullins, on the wing is sharpshooting Sophomore Brady Whitaker, and patrolling the middle is Senior big man Dalton Peters. Mullins is one of the hardest playing kids you will see throughout the region. He never gives up on a play and does a very good job of scoring, rebounding, and defending in the post. When the outside shot is not working and the Hornets need a basket, they go to Mullins down low. Don’t be surprised to see him put up a 20 point 20 rebound game. Whitaker is a kid that opens driving lanes for Lovely and Russell. He rarely creates his own shot, but shoots a high percentage behind the arc when you help off the two aforementioned stars. When the Hornets are rolling, Whitaker is hitting triples from the corner. Peters is very strong and very physical. He doesn’t look to score that much but is an excellent defender and rebounder. Peters will be out until mid to late December due to an intestinal tear suffered during football.

The Hornets shook a dubious distinction of having the longest 15th Region Tournament appearance drought last season when they made a deep run to the semifinals before falling to Lawrence County (Paintsville now holds that distinction: Piarist is not considered having never defeated any 15th Region opponent). This season they look to finish the job and make to Rupp arena for the first time in school history. They may have never had a shot this good either. A new school, the 57th District tournament at home, and 2 of the best players in program history in their senior years. This could be the year of the Hornet.

3. Sheldon Clark (9-22):

The Sheldon Clark Cardinals have a chance to be scary good this season as they return all but one player from last year’s team and add All State Candidate Dylan James and his 6’8’’ brother Trey James back to roster as they return home from Mercer County. Sheldon Clark had some growing pains last season, but will reap the rewards this campaign as key players got valuable experience. James is one of the best high school basketball players you will see. He can shoot from deep, take players into the post, rebound and defend. During his Sophomore season at SC (before transferring to Mercer) he averaged 20 plus points and 10 plus rebounds for almost the entirety of his varsity career (which dates back to his 6th grade season). Around James will be sharp shooting G/F Bradley Dalton. Dalton has a quick release and can fill it up on a given night as he proved versus Johnson Central at home last season hitting 7 triples in 8 attempts through three quarters before getting the box and one treatment. Dave Cantrall will run the wing for Sheldon Clark. The explosive lefty plays above the rim, has a good mid-range game, and is one of the best athletes in the region. Add Lawrence County Senior transfer Shawn Moore (parents work in Sheldon Clark School District) to run the point and you have a very strong team capable of making a run. Sheldon Clark will see Ethan Osborne, Heath Maynard, and Trey James likely come off the bench to give key minutes. The Cardinals are deep and have all the boxes needed to make a regional title run checked. They are the deepest team in the region aside from Johnson Central boasting 8 total Seniors.

The Cardinals did lose their starting point guard from last season in Drew Hatfield. The promising 8th grader, now Freshman, returned home to West Virginia to play. Don’t look for Sheldon Clark to have any trouble with teams in the region outside the 57th District (same can be said for Johnson Central and Magoffin County) as they will be a tough come tournament time. The question is what style will they play? Depth provides the ability to press but Sheldon Clark has been dominate in the half court the last several years. Look for the Cardinals to mix in both styles, but with a late lead go to half court sets with James in the post to seal the win. The Cardinals will be fun to watch this season.

Dylan James will have one of the most impressive careers in KHSAA history as he has a chance at 3,000 points and 1,500 rebounds before season’s end. Look for James to carry the load for the Cardinals of Sheldon Clark this season (Photo Credit: TJ Rushing Prep Hoops KY).

4. East Ridge (22-12):

The East Ridge Warriors look to build off a 20 win campaign and regional semifinal appearance last year as they return plenty of talent. To go along with their individual players, they run in a controlled system governed by Head Coach Randy McCoy. The thing about their system is they don’t beat themselves, look to keep the game in the low 40’s, and will absolutely execute your brains out in the half court set. In an era of run-and-gun, East Ridge has figured out a way to control tempo and make you work on the defense end. This frustrates teams and coaches as they don’t get near the volume of possessions they are accustomed to and always keeps the Warriors in the game. Needless to say, East Ridge rarely takes a bad shot.

East Ridge does like to control tempo, but that doesn’t mean they can’t and won’t press at certain points. They will be led by Seniors Michael Conn and Matt Miller who have the athleticism and ability to do just that if needed. Conn is as solid as they come as a point guard and rarely gets flustered under pressure. An extremely good passer and team first kind of kid, Conn might go for big numbers one night, then defer the next, taking very few shots. Miller is a slasher and swing man that can play inside out. He scores in the post, attacks the rim from the short corners, and can hit the triple when left open. Miller and Conn play well together and are extremely difficult to stop in the half court pick and roll. When you put them in McCoy’s system, they can be very frustrating. It sometimes seems a 5 point East Ridge leads feels like a 15 point lead for any other team.

The Warriros have Miller and Conn at the focal point of when they are trying to accomplish, but they also have plenty of Senior role players that have bought into the system. Dawson Clark and Justin Potter can both shoot from distance, have the size and strength to guard multiple positions, and “own their roles”. East Ridge will continually get better as the season progresses under Randy McCoy. They won’t wow you, but the will be right there in the end of almost every game they play. Don’t be surprised to see them knock off one of the contenders from the 57th.

5. Pikeville (17-16):

This summer Pikeville “decided to go in a different direction” as they replaced long time and well respected Head Coach Bart Williams (now Head Coach at Bath County) with former Shelby Valley Mr. Basketball and UPike star Elisha Justice (former coach of June Buchanan). Elisha is well respected in the community but is very young as a Head Coach. The jury is still out on what kind of product Justice can put on the floor, but the Panthers have plenty of pieces to make a deep run the season.

Multi-sport star Wyatt Battaile will lead Pikeville on the hardwood. Already holding a D1 basketball offer to Mercer, look for Battaile to garner more attention and awards as the season progresses. He can shoot from distance, is extremely athletic, and can handle ball. Battaile’s MO is his pull up mid-range game off the pass but don’t be surprised to see some back to the basket isolation. Pikeville has a few nice pieces around him to help alleviate double teams as well. Betsy Layne transfers Zach Hamilton (big man) and Kyle Watkins (guard) will help in this endeavor. Hamilton can score and rebound in the post (put 30 and 15 on Pikeville last season in a win) and Watkins is solid at the guard position.

The Panthers might be ranked higher as the season progresses, but with so many unknowns we will have to wait and see what style they play and how the personnel meshes together. Right now we know they have one very good player that will be adapting to a new coach and new system to go along with two good role players. The Pikeville faithful believe in this team, but the proof will be in the pudding.

6. Shelby Valley (17-12):

The Shelby Valley Wildcats will be without several players this upcoming season for a myriad of reasons, will be very young, but are also very talented. Senior standout Lamont Wright is no longer with the team (had 40 plus points in a game last season) for undisclosed reasons and is not expected to play anywhere, freshman point guard Kobe Brown has reportedly left to attend Pikeville (unconfirmed at time of publication), and Potter and Beverly have reportedly quit. This sounds like a team in turmoil, but what you might not know is what the Wildcats have in their underclassmen. The Dorton/Virgie pipeline has always produced great talent and we could see a resurgence of that this season.

Frosh Shelby Valley team completed a 23-1 summer campaign against very good competition, winning a tournament in Tennessee. Couple that with an easy opening season schedule to build confidence and Shelby Valley will be a contender in the 59th District. They have 8-10 kids that play very hard. They are hungry, press, and have shooters everywhere. They have size in their freshman class and two of the best scorers you will see in the region Peyton Blackburn and Cody Potter.

If Head Coach Jim Hicks can get them to buy into his system, Shelby Valley has the pieces to be very competitive. We will know more by the 3rd week of the season when they travel to Johnson Central as they should be undefeated going into that contest. You also never know if bridges can be mended and some of the players that have quit will return.

7. Lawrence County (29-5):

Coming off their first regional title in school history, Lawrence County will be very young and inexperienced. They do, however, have Mr. Timmy Dalton to aid in the transition. Dalton is on pace to shatter the school scoring record set by his brother Robert last season and also has a shot at the school rebound record. He plays way above the rim and can do it all (pass, defend, rebound, and score). Dalton will look to lead his team in the rebuilding process but has the ability to beat teams by himself. With him on the floor, everyone else is better.

Head Coach Travis York will have sure handed scorer Alex Gilliam at the point and a ton of very young kids that have shown promise in the summer. If they can keep it close, look for Timmy to take over late in games. Many think the Bulldogs will be a pushover this season, but make no mistake, Dalton’s talent will pull them through many games. Lawrence will steadily get better though the season and could steal a game or two in the tournament with Dalton.

8. Paintsville (8-17):

Paintsville is quickly becoming a football school in the post Bill Mike Runyon era, but still has the talent to compete in a loaded 57th District. Enter 1st year Head Coach and former UK player Landon Slone. Slone was a senior on the last Paintsville team to make it out of the 57th and into the regional tournament in 2008. Paintsville now holds the longest regional tournament appearance drought of any school in the 15th (minus Piarist who have never defeated a 15th Region opponent). Slone will look to rectify that as his tenure begins.

Four of the five projected starters are still playing football (James Allen, Chris Allen, Tyrese Allen, and Darren Morris) so don’t expect Paintsville to start out very strong as the season opens. In fact, look for them to be peaking in mid-January. As the season progresses their record might not reflect how good they are as they play in the 57th and must face the 3 best teams in the region a minimum of 7 times (to include district tournament). Paintsville is tough and extremely physical. They will fight you for every loose ball and use every foul given to them. Get the ice bath ready for after the game as win or lose they will make sure you earned it every point you got. Look for a lot of full court pressure as they are undersized in the half court and will rely on easy buckets off their defense. If in any other district, the Tigers would be favored to make to the regional tournament.

9. Belfry (12-18):

Belfry will be without big man Cole Bentley (will enroll early at UofL for football) and without standouts Austin Woolum, Koleston Blankeship, and fullback Huffman (if he elects to play) until after football season is over. Like Paintsville, look for the Pirates to open slow with a skeleton roster, but be much improved as the season goes along.

Isaiah Roblee has improved tremendously with his quickness and strength and will provide much needed shooting for the Pirates. With Woolum at point and Blankenship moving from inside to outside, Belfry will have plenty of talent to compete with anyone. Their ceiling in very high if they all pull together under one system. Expect them to be in the regional tournament come post-season and expect them to be a very scary team no one wants to draw.

10. Pike County Central (12-19):

Pikeville lost a lot to graduation and also picked up a new Coach in Ryan Whitaker (formerly of Powell County) as their former Head Coach Keith May moved into an administration role at the school. Rumors have it they have a 6’5’’ transfer that is eligible, but that is unconfirmed at time of print. What we do know is they have Ryan Eads, Blake Wallace and QB Seth Conn returning. Eads is a very athletic, big who can guard multiple positions and Conn is strong point guard who can finish through contact. Wallace is a physical big who will provide toughness in the post. Like Pikeville, the jury is still out on the new coach and new system. Look for lots of fluctuation in the rankings as the season progresses with the Hawks, but expect them to return back to the regional tournament after being defeated in triple overtime last year.

11. South Floyd (17-13):

This is the last year for South Floyd High School in the 15th Region but look for them to continue their dominance in the 58th District. Coming off back to back district championships, the Raiders have the ability to make it a 3-peat before consolidating into Floyd County Central. Three big time player were lost to graduation last season, but JR Tackett, Brady Conn, and Jacob Collins provide size and scoring respectively. The Raiders will push when available, but look for everything to go through Tackett at the point as he creates off the dribble and runs the pick and roll with this bigs. You should expect this team in the regional tournament as the 58th District is not as strong as it once was.

12. Allen Central (17-16):

Allen Central, like South Floyd, is coming into their final year in the 15th Region as they await consolidation into Floyd County Central. The Rebels are scrappy and shoot the deep ball very well. Ethan Smith-Mills is going to be one of the best players in the region for a long time as he is only a Freshman this season. Look for him to average near 20 points per game and lead the Rebels into the regional tournament for the 3rd consecutive year. Smith-Mills will be set up by Juniors Caudill and Nelson. Allen Central is a physical squad that, if they stay out of foul trouble, can cause problems with any team in the region. This team has the potential to be better than many expect.

13. Prestonsburg (7-22):

The Blackcats lost one of the best post players in school history in Dalton Frasure and have had Senior Standout Scott Stapleton elect to focus on power lifting rather than play basketball. Needless to say, Prestonsburg has fallen on hard times. Luckily they are in the 58th District and will have a chance to advance to the regional tournament. Wesley Hager and Drake Nunnery will lead the Blackcats this season as they will have to play scrappy and physical to earn wins. The future is bright, however, and the middle school and grade school has plenty of talent coming Prestonsburg’s way.

14. Phelps (6-24):

Christian Mounts is a flat stud at Phelps and electric to watch. He usually has a highlight dunk or amazing scoring performance from the guard position each night. Phelps, however is young and improving. They could mount a charge in the 60th as there might not be the powerhouse team like in years past, but don’t expect the Hornets threaten the top teams in the region. Mounts is fun to watch, however, if you get a chance you should watch this kid play!

15. Betsy Layne (12-19):

Betsy Layne was going to be young and scrappy before entering the season and that’s before they lost their two best players to Pikeville in transfers. We haven’t seen enough from the Bobcats young kids to make a determination on how good they can be. With Watkins and Hamilton, top 10 perhaps, without….well we will start them here and see how high they can climb. Expect a rebuilding year for the Bobcats.

16. Piarist (0-25):

Kevin Tackett is back at the helm for Piarist, but don’t expect much from a program that has never defeated any 15th Region opponent. The Knights will hopefully pick up a win or two in the Christian league as basketball is more of an extracurricular activity than a sport at the school. Piarist is a high academic school the focuses on GPA more than PPG.

15th Region Player Rankings:

1. Timmy Dalton (Lawrence County) 6’3’’ Senior (SF)

Timmy Dalton2 (John Nolan Photo Credit)2.jpg

Timmy Dalton at the state tournament last season for Lawrence County. Dalton will lead a very young team this year but has the ability to keep them in almost any game they play.(Photo Credit: John Nolan Photography)

Timmy Dalton is one of the most dynamic players in the state. He plays way above the rim from the guard position, can handle the ball out front, guard your center or your point guard, and take control of the game offensively down the stretch if need be. Dalton is less than 100 points away from breaking the school’s scoring record currently held by his brother Robert and if he has a big season could get near 3,000 career points (currently just shy of 2,000). Starting for M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs AAU this summer, Timmy helped lead his team to a national championship game birth. Dalton has committed to play next season at Salem International University in Salem, WV and is the reigning ADI All Area POY, 15th Region Coaches Association POY, and 15th Region Tournament MVP. Dalton is the most explosive athlete in the region and should provide a few highlight dunks each game. Look for him to make many all-state ballots by season’s end.

2. Mason Blair (Johnson Central) 6’0’’ Senior (SG)

Mason Blair 2016.jpg

Mason Blair is electric with the ball in his hands and more athletic than many think. Perhaps the best scorer in the state, Blair will lead a talented Johnson Central team to what they hope is their 6th straight regional finals appearance.

Perhaps the best pure scorer in the state, Mason Blair can go off for 50 plus on a given night. Blair has great elevation on his jumper and one of the quickest releases you will ever see. If his shot is falling, there is not much anyone can do. Just ask Belfry as last season as Blair scored 30 points on them in the first quarter alone. Blair proved he can score against the best in the nation this summer starting for M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs as they advanced to the AAU large division national championship game before falling. Blair had double digits in the championship and multiple 20 point games throughout the tournament. Leading the state in made 3FG last season, look for Blair to be near the top in overall scoring this year as he should surpass the 2,000 point mark! Over the summer Blair added 4 inches to his vertical leap and has begun dunking the basketball with both hands. Mason has several offers from NAIA to D2 but has yet to commit. For Blair, the brighter the lights, the better he plays!

3. Trenton Russell (Magoffin County) 6’3’’ Senior (SF)

Trenton Russell - Photo Credit Jim Arnett.jpg

Trenton Russell pulls up for a jumper in the regional tournament last season. Russell has unique versatility that allows him to play both inside and outside depending on the matchup. Russell has a chance at 3,000 points with a big year.

Trenton Russell is has perhaps the best footwork in the region and is one of the more underrated rebounders in the state. Russell has range beyond the 3 point line and is one of the top free throw shooters in the state. Russell’s high release makes it difficult for defenders to stop him from getting his shot off and with his skill set has the ability to take small guards into the post while isolating bigs on the outside and driving by them. Russell rarely comes off the floor and has shown the ability to put up big numbers, scoring 47 in a game last season. By the end of the season Russell could surpass the 3,000 point mark and will likely average near 8 rebounds per a game as well. Russell has a few NAIA to D3 offers but has yet to commit. Russell will try to lead Magoffin County to its first sweet sixteen in school history.

4. Dylan James (Sheldon Clark) 6’4’’ Senior (SF)

Dylan James returned home to lead Sheldon Clark in his Senior season. James is a matchup nightmare for teams as his strength allows him to guard bigs, play in the post, and dominate the boards while his skill set provides range five feet beyond the 3 point line. Playing for one the best teams in the state last season (Mercer County), James showed he could produce outside the 15th Region. Dylan has a flair for the big games and always shows up late with big play after big play. His career numbers are historically good as he will likely surpass 3,000 points and 1,500 rebounds by season end. That would put him in rare KHSAA company.

5. Wyatt Battaile (Pikeville) 6’3’’ Junior (SF)

Pikeville will be led by multi-sport star Wyatt Battaile this season on the hardwood. The versatile wing can play inside or out, rebounds and defends well, and can shoot the triple with accuracy. The top Junior in the region has already received a D1 basketball offer to Mercer to go along with his football opportunities as he also plays QB for the Panthers. Battaile can play above the rim and guard any position on the floor. Look for new Pikeville Head Coach Elisah Justice to rely heavily on Battile throughout the season as he expected to have a very big year.

6. Cole Crace (Johnson Central) 6’0’’ Senior (G)

One of the most athletic guards in the state, Crace can do it all. He plays above the rim through traffic, can finish with either hand in the lane, can run the point when needed, is the best defender on the team who routinely draws the assignment of the other teams best player, and can shoot from beyond the arc when defenders sag to protect against the drive. Crace is extremely fast from end to end but also quick laterally. Blessed with tons of fast glycolytic muscle, Crace has the ability to affect the game in multiple ways and could be the most complete guard in the region. Look for him to fill the stat sheet night in and night out, possibly recording multiple triple doubles. His energy and athleticism is tough for anyone to match and he doesn’t have to score to impact a game. Crace had multiple 20 point games last season from the guard position as well as multiple double-doubles.

Cole Crace 1.jpg

Pound for pound Cole Crace is the best all around athlete in the 15th Region. His leaping ability allows him to dunk with both hands through traffic. His quickness allows him blow by anyone and guard anyone on the perimeter. Alongside Mason Blair, Crace will form the 2nd half of what could be the best back court in the state. Look for Crace to put up multiple triple-doubles as he can do it all. (Photo Credit: Josh Ball Ashland Daily)

7. Jaren Lovely (Magoffin County) 6’0’’ Senior (PG)

The sweet shooting lefty will run the point for a loaded Hornets squad this year. Lovely has put on 5-10 lbs. of muscle in the off season and already signed to play D1 baseball at Marshall (pitcher). That extra strength will help him in a guard heavy, extremely difficult, 57th District as Lovely looks to guide the Hornets to the sweet sixteen for the first time in school history. Trenton Russell might be the best player for Magoffin County, but there is no doubt Lovely is the most important. He runs the offense, handles the ball against the press, and is a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor out to 25 feet. Lovely has very few holes in his game and keeps teams honest when they double team Russell. Look for this dynamic guard to average near 20 points again this season as he is nearing the 2,000 plateau.

Jaren Lovely of Magoffin County could be the most important player the Hornets have as he will handle the pressure and run the show for Head Coach Robbie Russell. Lovely is already a D1 baseball signee (Marshall) and nearing 2,000 career points.

8. Michael Conn (East Ridge) 6’0’’ Senior (G)

He won’t wow you with athleticism. He won’t average 25 points a game. But make no mistake that Michael Conn is a really good basketball player who knows the game. He can score, he can get in the paint and finish, he is an excellent passer who doesn’t get rattled when the count is on him, his teammates feed off his leadership, and he is a direct extension of his Head Coach Randy McCoy. Conn plays in a controlled system and will never allow his team to beat themselves. Some nights he might score 30, others he might not take a shot. The kid is a winner and a way you might hear him described is “solid”. If unaccounted for, however, he can beat you on his own. East Ridge will go as far as Conn can take them as he should have another outstanding year.

9. Ryan Eads (Pike Central) 6’4’’ Senior (PF)

Ryan Eads had a great summer in AAU, showing off his athleticism and ability to finish around the rim, garnering plenty of college attention from the NAIA to D3 level. He can use both hands effectively in the paint, runs the floor well, and has functional range to 18 feet. Eads is very athletic and can guard any position on the floor while playing above the rim. He rebounds very well on the offensive glass and has the ability take over a game with his defensive energy. Look for him to be featured in this year’s offense as he takes a Senior leadership role.

10. Christian Mounts (Phelps) 6’1’’ Junior (G)

Christian Mounts is without a doubt the most underrated, forgotten about player in the 15th Region but he shouldn’t be. Mounts is a great leaper from the guard position who can drive past defenders and dunk it on them. In fact, they even through back door lobs to him. It’s amazing when you see it because you wouldn’t think it would be possible based on his build. That’s not all the kid can do though. The three sport star can dribble, shoot from distance, and has an unblockable fade away with the height he gets on his jump shot. If you get a chance to see Phelps play this year, go to watch Mounts. He is worth the price of admission and should have a monster year this season. If Mounts were in a more populated area, he would likely garner all state consideration.

12711058_500026543510067_5020356792169992390_o.jpg

The least talked about player in the 15th Region might be Christian Mounts, but he shouldn’t be. The kid has several in game dunks from the guard position and can fill it up from the outside. The 3-sport star is an extremely difficult cover for anyone in region as he looks to make some noise for the Phelps community.

What a write up, kudos for the time it took you to do that.

Don't underestimate that Lawrence County team.

The gold standard for reviews. Good work. Much appreciated.

Cant wait to tip off the season! Should be a great year for 15th Region Basketball!

  • Author

One addition to be made. Shelby Valley Head Coach Jim Hicks coached Owlsey County in 2001-2002 with a record of 12-13. It was inadvertently omitted. Please note the years Head Coaches coached is listed by the Spring year of that season, meaning this season would have been logged as 2012.
