Beechwood 42 Kentucky Country Day 7

Tigers move to the semi final..

Congrats Beechwood. KCD hung tough for a half..

Congrats Beechwood - Pounded another 1A Team - Impressive

It was a much tougher game than the score indicates. Kentucky Country Day is a very good team. The Beechwood defense finally figured out how to stop that offense and shut them down in the second half. A very big night running the ball for Justice and Davis for Beechwood.

This game was very hard fought. Kentucky Country Day was just as good as they looked on the film I saw. Beechwood's defense met the challenge in a serious test in this game.

Q1

Beechwood received the opening kick and went 3 and out. KCD's first drive was better. They moved the ball from the 13 into Beechwood territory before the Tigers forced a punt. Beechwood start their next drive at the 13 also and worked their way up the field with run after run by RB Aiden Justice. With 2:02 to go in the quarter Justice scored on a 1 yard run, Daniel Mescher kicked the extra point and Beechwood led 7-0. KCD moved the ball again on their next drive but Mescher intercepted a pass to end the drive.

Q2

Beechwood could not mount a drive after the interception and punted the ball back to KCD. The Bearcats then finally finished a drive off as they moved from their 29 to a score with 3:07 left in the half. RB Ed Johnson ran it in from 2 yards out and a Michael Wright XP tied the game at 7. One of the biggest plays in the game happened next. Beechwood QB Brayden Burch immediately connected on a long pass 50 yard pass to Mescher down to the 3 yard line. Trevor Soward scored from 1 yard out with 1:53 to go in the half. Just over one minute after KCD had worked so hard to get the game tied, after Mescher's XP the Tigers quickly were back in front 14-7. And that is how the half ended.

Q3

KCD received the second half kick and came out focused, but so did the Tiger defense forcing a 3 and out. Beechwood then moved the ball in for TD, Justice scoring from 18 yards out, Mescher XP and it was 21-7 at the 7:24 mark. KCD needed to do something to stop the momentum but Beechwood's defense forced another 3 and out. The Tigers once again ran the ball with James Davis making the big runs on this drive. Davis scored on a very nice 18 yard run, Mescher XP 28-7 with 5:09 to go. KCD was in trouble. They managed to get a first down on this drive but that was all as Beechwood's defense forced another punt. But on their next drive the Tigers got a little greedy trying to finish it off and a long Burch pass attempt was intercepted by KCD's Blake Caldwell. The interception gave KCD some energy. They picked up a first down, then another and moved into Beechwood territory. On a 4th down try, Beechwood DE Dalton Everrett sacked QB Jackson Diaz to end the drive and get the ball back for the Tigers. KCD's defense did what they had to do and forced a 3 and out for Beechwood. However, on the punt the refs called holding on KCD before the ball was punted. That gave Beechwood the yardage they needed for a first down.

Q4

Beechwood capitalized on that penalty and worked their way to the 20. Trevor Soward ran it in from there, Mescher XP 35-7 with 10:45 left in the game. That put the game out of reach. KCD went 3 and out again. Then Beechwood removed all doubt on a 98 yard drive capped off by a brilliant 51 yard TD run by James Davis that had it all - cuts backs, broken tackles and pure speed. Mescher added the XP to give us the final score of 42-7. After one final 3 and out by KCD, Beechwood's second team finished it off from there and actually moved the ball down to the 20 where the game ended.

Final Score Tigers 42 Bearcats 7

Beechwood's defense was once again excellent. In the second half, KCD had 6 possessions. There were three 3 and outs, 2 others were one first down then punt and the other drive was stopped on downs.

KCD has a young team. They will certainly miss outstanding seniors Jared Frank and Ed Johnson but they return QB Diaz, inpressive 300 pound lineman Brandon Leonard, talented Josh Lifson and others. KCD will be a very good team in 2017. Congratulations to the Bearcats on an excellent season.

Now the West Bracket starts to get a little competitive! I would think the semi should be a good game!

The post game take on this game was very insightful....and much appreciated by the kids from KCD who made this an entertaining game in the first half and finished up a super season. Looking ahead to tonight in BG, the Bearcats will be pulling for the classy, skilled and football smart Tigers from Ft Thomas.

KCD brings a lot of kids back as has been pointed out-- nine starters on Defense, and eight on Offense. It would be an honor to face the Tigers again in the regional finals. Good luck to them in BG.

Wrong Fort :lol2: Although, if Beechwood is pulling players from Fort Thomas, that might explain the struggles at Highlands!

As for KCD, good to see their program having success. I remember some very dark days in the late-80s/early-90s for the Bearcats. It will be interesting to see if they (and honestly, Louisville Holy Cross) can ever take the step to the top of 1A.

Whoops my bad on the Forts....preciate the kind way I got the education.

I'm not sure if KCD can....just know that next year is really its' best chance in a long time and for the future....this was a junior dominated team and the cupboard is pretty bare coming up. I do think it boils down to "tradition." Some schools have it and the kids live it year to year. Others don't and must take advantage of that "special" group that comes along once in a decade or more.

There are so many programs to admire for dedication to tradition and how that serves teams so well with performance on the field in loaded years and leaner years. Beechwood is certainly that kind of program. There's tons of buy-in. And yes it's admirable.

All comments were genuine. I was impressed with KCD. They are well coached and have some really good players. That game and experience versus the KCD offense definitely has Beechwood better prepared for tonight's game versus Hazard. KCD should have a very good team next year. I appreciate your posts and sharing viewpoints from the KCD program.

KCD doesn't make it to the regional finals too terribly often, so this was a great experience for the kids...and great exposure to folks who don't typically follow the Bearcats. All good. And a safe, successful evening to Beechwood tonight.
