WW I ended today. And Veterans day.

Featured Replies

On 11-11-18 World War I ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles.

This led to the creation of Veterans Day

It's always interesting to me that this is Veterans' Day. The Armistice Day and Remembrance Day commemorations going on around the world today are much closer to what we have in Memorial Day.

Anyone know why we have Veterans' Day in November instead of Memorial Day?

Perhaps by coincidence or not (I genuinely don't know the history), today is also the Catholic feast day of St. Martin of Tours, the Roman-Centurion-turned-monk who is the patron saint of soldiers.

Shooting from the hip, but World War I was never as big of deal in the US as in other parts of the world (not as many deaths, no industrial damage, no government change, etc.) I just always assumed that interest in celebrating was never very high. Making it an all-encompassing "Veterans Day" brought in more affected parties and made it a more meaningful holiday nationwide.

It's the significance of "11" not only in the date but the fact it ended in the 11th hour.

America has never realized the sacrifice of an entire generation that Europe made in that war. France in particular.

But that stupid charge over the trench into no mans land into machine guns made no sense.

It was like suicide.

Sometimes the weapons are ahead of military tactics. The American Civil War was fought still using Napoleonic tactics. France and Great Britain, at the start of WWII, thought it would be fought in the same way of WWI.
