Should this Law Prof be fired?

Featured Replies

I don't particularly have a problem with the professor being fired. Anyone who is old enough to be a senior law professor at the University of Oregon is old enough to know how inappropriate it is to dress in blackface.

...so that's an excuse to act irresponsibly and insult an entire race of people?

Isnt this a toooooo little over the top of political correctness.

This response tells me you do not know the history of blackface.

I am hesitant to tell a company or employer who to fire. I am big in the market responding to their decisions.

No. Not even a little.

Hollywood managed to realize that black face was extremely insensitive and stopped doing it back in the 1950s and 1960s. Not that I think society should be based on the morals or social norms laid out by Hollywood, but when something is too controversial for Hollywood, that's saying something...and black face has been too controversial for them for over a half century.

So would it be offensive for me to paint my face up and be Obama?

Yeah I don't know about fired, but that was just... kinda dumb.

No. Not even a little.

Was the Movie "White Chicks" over the line?

For the record Blackface seems to just be a dumb idea, not sure why anyone would even consider it.

Well first off, "White Chicks" looked like an absolutely awful movie, so I never saw it. And yes, I do think the movie is distasteful, but I don't think "white face" is NEARLY as distasteful and insulting as anything black face is.

It's about what is behind black face that makes it so offensive. Black face came about in the early Vaudevillian mistrel show era as a "funny" way to degrade black people by reinforcing stereotypes about blacks being being poor, dumb, simple, and generally less refined than the white people who were portraying them behind the makeup. It was specifically made to make fun of "poor black folks".

On the flipside, there really is no historic precedent for black people painting their faces white to portray white people. If "white face" was a 150 year old method of insulting and degrading white people, then I would say it is much more over the line.

I agree I was just asking the question...however it does look like White Chicks was made to make white teen girls look stupid and shallow also. Both are in bad taste, but yes blackface is worse.
