This year's all-region choices

Featured Replies

First region had no players on first team from winning team. Not sure they were first team, but several players from a few schools who didn't even play in regional tourney, like 5 -7. I know stats aren't everything but they should mean something.

The Coach of the Year decision is the one that puzzles me......

Can someone give me some stats on the HHS coach? Help me understand. Yes, I'm looking at the CCH Coach. I know he won it last year, but after losing 18 seniors (8/9 starters), he brought the team back to the level it was......

They were 18-3-2. In their only meeting this season, they beat the Germans 2-1.

In all seriousness, I think J.R. did a good job last year but I am more impressed with the job he has done this year.

Seems like Calvary Christian or Holmes' Coaches would also have been a very good choice....

The exclusion of one of the best players from the best team in the region show what a politically correct farce this list has become. Every team gets a spot!

Cole's omission from this list is puzzling to me, this also got me looking a little closer at the entire list. It seems a little strange for this team to have a few players on the first team but no other players at any position on the 2nd, 3rd or HM teams. IMO, I can think of a couple CCH players that should have also been selected, it makes me wonder if there were only 3 players nominated.

Totally agree. This list generally does not represent all the best players. Not saying a great player from a horrible team shouldn't make list, but it should be rare. Having players from those teams every year diminishes the award.

Not sure I would use all of these same words, put I agree with these 3 post. I think it is long over due to simply do away with what has for years now become known as the "All recognition for years of service awards/it's your (coaches) turn awards." Taking nothing away from every player on this list but the omissions from that one team that just happens to be the ONLY team still playing, the top ranked team that played the most difficult schedule, that scored the most goals and tied for third for goals allowed from all of the teams represented on this list is embarrassing IMO.

I have no proof but I don't buy CCH only dominated 3 players. For them to do so they had to NOT dominate Stava…think about that for a moment.

I could go on for pages and pages but sometimes less is more. As in less individual awards but one heck of a unified good team!

In "politicizing" or "watering down" the list , it affects the list of those chosen in the past. Not every school will be, or should be represented if you only look at the skills of the players. There are some teams where the best players would not even see the field on other teams.

Two words......participation trophies. At some point, it ends.

I personally think the all region team is a good thing for the players. Yes some players get missed, yes some players make the team when they maybe aren't good at others, but kids ARE at least getting recognized. Remember, some of the kids you are saying shouldn't make the team, play on less skilled teams. Who's to say they couldn't be a better player on a more skilled team. We can't disqualify them because there team lost to many games, that's not fair either. Tell me, what other REGION in the state has an All Region Team. What other REGION in the state has an banquet to honor for these kids to go to and get honored......................The answer is NONE. Instead of griping about who was missed, let's recognize the other side, this region at least cares enough to make the effort to recognize players for soccer. Coaches will be coaches, they will vote for a multitude of reasons, we can't change that. Some of these players it may be there only recognition they will ever receive, that is okay. If they made the list, they were at least noticed by some coaches. There is a lot of competition in this region, I'm sure that Highlands, Ryle, St. Henry and others nominated players that didn't make the team. We don't here those people complaining. Looking at the list the striker competition and goalie competition was tough for voting this year. Remember the player your complaining didn't make the team, played several positions this year, meaning different coaches saw him play different ways. This will affect his votes, and his final position was striker, which was a stacked position. Ever year some one gets missed, we don't even no for sure if he was nominated for all region. I was told by one coach he was surprised at how few nominations came from that specific team, the point is unless the coach tells us he nominated him we will never know. I just think instead of blasting the situation, let's keep perspective and be happy that the players in our region at least get a chance to be recognized.

Very well said.

I am not from the region those schools are, but a western region. There are at least 3 this end of state with all Region team; although, no banquet. For us, it's more about recognition. We have excellent local coverage but for our kids to get noticed statewide, they need all they can get. I agree kids on a less talented team could be named, but when you have larger number of kids from much less successful teams, it's frustrating.

Kind of like Muck for NCC making second team? 17 goals and 13 assists playing with an average team against good competition warrants a first team selection IMO

Hard to argue that he should have been on first team above 4 players who all played a tougher schedule (per maher rankings schedule strength). A lot of his goals came against much easier competition. Also, keep in mind he is only a junior, whereas the 7 players chosen above him are all seniors, something I believe coaches definitely consider when voting. Muck had a great year and I would be surprised not see him appear on first team next year.

This only reinforces the need to change the name to the "All recognition for years of service award." Just because a player has a good year one year should have no bearing on him winning an award the following year. It should be a year by year evaluation, every year each player starts on equal ground, obviously this is not the case. Players that play varsity 3-4 years get tons more recognition then the players playing varsity a year or two. This makes zero sense. Playing boys varsity your freshman or sophomore yr has more to do with lack of depth in that program. Simply look at CCH for example. 18 seniors, 8, 9, at times 10 of them are starters on the State Championship team in 2015. That situation prevented any of last year's juniors from being on varsity. Does this mean they were not good enough to play varsity, no many would have started for any other varsity team last year and some their freshman yr. Jump ahead to 2016 season, CCH repeats winning the very tough 9th region and are getting ready to play in the State Tournament Qt Finals. That is how you define depth in a program. Players attending CCH know they will have to wait their turn to contribute at the varsity level, but are rewarded by winning a regional title, winning their first State Tournament game and are on their way to a State QT Final game.

2 much info... I do not think your comparison is anywhere near the same as the point GP was making, not apples to apples IMO.

He is making a reference to a player being completely excluded from the list versus you trying to make a case for someone not being on the first team.

GPR, I do not disagree with your comments at all and I believe the all region teams don't always seem to consist of the best players in the area, a perfect example being Stava left off this year. I think some of this would have to do with him most likely not being nominated this year by his coach because I don't see their being anyway possible that he was and just wasn't voted for by other coaches. However to clarify, I did not mean that Muck should make first team next year because he did well this year, I simply expect him to have an equally successful season next year if not better.

Who do you replace on the 1st team?
