My Top 30 Coaching Jobs in College Football

Featured Replies

Got bored today and created this list. This is just my opinion nobody else. The Top 5 are pretty interchangeable but I have them in the order I do because of recruiting base, fan base, competition, and overall tradition of the school. Feel free to disagree as I'm sure a lot of you will.

Clemson?

Sell me on Ohio State over Bama.

Based on your own criteria, Ohio St is at best 3rd and possibly as low as 5th.

Based on criteria goven, Florida is way too low on this list.

Hard to rank any job over Alabama. Money, tradition, fan base, in the SEC, pretty decent weather, close to tons of talent.`What a shame that it took Saban to bring it back.

Michigan, Ohio State and Florida would be in my top five. You have such tradition with Michigan and Ohio State, Ohio has tons of talented players. With Florida you have THE school in the most talent rich state in the country. It ranks above FSU because of the SEC, IMO. In the next batch I'd put schools like Texas, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma and FSU. Great schools, but with some limitations in certain areas (Boosters at UT, Academics at Notre Dame and USC, OU having to leave state for players, FSU having to compete for players in Florida with the SEC). I'd honestly be tempted to put FSU 5th because I don't think it takes a special coach to be successful there. Notre Dame, Texas, and USC have proven that not just anyone can coach there.

In the next tier I'd put schools like LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson, Auburn and A&M. Lots of SEC love in there, but if you're not at Texas or USC or the like, SEC jobs for the most part are better than all the rest.

In the 4th tier I'd put schools like Stanford, Miami, Oregon, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, Washington, UCLA, Ole Miss. Good to great tradition, but for one reason or another not quite as good as the other tiers.

5th tier I'd put Louisville, TCU, Arkansas, Michigan State, Iowa, S. Carolina, UNC, Virginia Tech, W. Virginia etc. You can win huge there, but you can also be completely irrelevant without a good to great coach. These schools do not have automatic access to great talent or do not always keep their talent at home (see S. Carolina).

Clemson?

I don't know how I didn't put Clemson in there. Good catch. I would have Clemson at 12 behind Nebraska and ahead of Wisconsin.

Sell me on Ohio State over Bama.

No other program in Ohio, has had more consistent success in my lifetime, Ohio > Alabama recruiting wise, and better fanbase in my opinion. But like I said the top 5 are debatable.

I also had Florida and FSU switched. I really should have double checked this list before I posted.

Why Florida isn't in my top 5: 3 major cfb teams in Florida. Remember I said this is coaching jobs not best programs.

Then UK needs to be on the list, the job over pays and expectations are very low. What coach wouldn't want good pay and low expectations?

Expectations are too high. UK is where coaches go to die, not where coaches go to blossom.

The list is based on "right now," correct?

If so, the lack of success in the Shula/Dubose era is irrelevant. Right now they have the most championships in recent times.

I'd also take issue with recruiting and your "Ohio v Alabama." Bama recruits the entire south primarily plus the entire country for others.

Bama is #1 for me.

I'm speaking from a purely state by state basis, Ohio is a better overall state for recruiting than Alabama is.
