To be clear, I'm not anointing MadBum, simply asking the question:

He's 8-3 in the postseason with an era slightly over 2.00 (including this year). He's made 14 starts and 3 of those have resulted in shutouts. He also has one save.

His performance in the 2014 World Series alone merits some consideration: 3 appearances, 2 wins, 1 save and a 0.43 ERA in 21 innings.

There have been several HOF pitchers mentioned in this thread that are worthy of consideration, too. Do you have another nominee?

How about Curt Schilling?

Strong nomination, UKMF.

Schilling pitched in the playoffs five (5) times: 1993 (Philly), 2001 (Arizona), 2004 (Boston) and 2007 (Boston).

He has made 19 starts: 11-2 Record with 2.23 ERA (4 CG, 2 shutouts)

In the World Series, Schilling is 4-1 with 2.06 ERA in 7 starts.

Other names that come to mind for me:

Andy Pettite:

More playoff wins than any other pitcher (19);

276 playoff innings pitched (most ever)

183 playoff strikeouts (2nd all time)

Pettite "ranks" well when compared to other postseason stats, but mostly because of how frequently his team participated in the playoffs.

In 14 postseason apperances, Pettite's numbers are as follows: 44 games (44 starts), 19-11 record, 3.81 ERA

Pettite played in eight (8) world series -- 13 starts (5-4 W-L Record), 4.06 ERA.

John Smoltz:

14 playoff appearances, 13 with Atlanta and one (1) with STL (2009).

27 starts: 15-4 Record, 1 shutout, 4 saves (209 innings total)

In 5 World Series: 8 games (all starts), 2-2 record, 2.47 ERA

Smoltz is 2nd in playoff wins, behind only Pettite. He is #1 in postseason strikeouts with 199.

Sandy Koufax

His only playoff experience is four (4) World Series (1959, 1963, 1965 & 1966). Koufax earned MVP in '63 & '65.

8 Games - 7 starts. 4-3 W-L Record with 0.95 ERA. He only threw 57 innings total.

As a two-time MVP, Koufax deserves consideration based on his performance in 1965 alone when he went 2-1 in 3 starts with 2 CG shutouts. His 2nd shutout in 1965 is widely regarded as one of the best pitching performances ever. He started in Game 5 & threw a complete game shutout against the Twins. Koufax started TWO (2) days later and threw a three (3) hit shutout to win the world series. Rumor has it that Koufax's arm was so sore, he couldn't throw a curveball in Game 7.

Not uniquely germane to you, I just hate Best & Greatest threads because there are a million variables (like era) in people's opinions, there is no definite answer, and the "winner" of the mythical best award is still no better or worse than the other 8 or so deserved candidates.

Madison Bumgarner is a FANTASTIC post-season pitcher, I'm not sure why we need to try and quantify or qualify the list of worthy nominees. They are all really, really good.

So you don't have a nominee worthy of consideration? :D

Catfish Hunter was 10-2 in his Post season appearances.

5-1 in the World Series.

3.26 ERA overall in post season.
