2006 Playoffs - Rounds 3 & 4

Featured Replies

There has been a lot of confusion and speculating about how the playoffs will be conducted this season. We all know what the first two rounds will bring but have been uninformed about exactly what will happen in rounds 3 and 4.

The KHSAA has this new information posted in their tournament rules on the football page and it spells it out.

As I read it, the teams will still be broken down into regions and the semifinals will be R1 vs R2 and R3 vs R4, just like always. In 1A and 3A, the playoffs will be just like we are used to, with no changes. In 2A and 4A, however there will be a change in the districts making up each region.

In 2A the regions are as follow for 2006:

R1 = 1 vs. 2 (District 1 winner vs District 2 winner)

R2 = 3 vs. 5

R3 = 4 vs. 6

R4 = 7 vs. 8

And in 4A, the regions look like this:

R1 = 1 vs. 2

R2 = 3 vs. 6

R3 = 4 vs. 5

R4 = 7 vs. 8

Now, to the question of what happens in rounds 3 and 4 as far as home field advantage. With odd districts playing each other, there is no clear cut way to know who will host? Numbers 4 and 5 below address that. The semifinals will be determined on an odd/even rotation, just like always. The third round is a bit more complicated.

4) The highest seed (finishing position in the district) shall

host the regional championship game (third round). Should

teams with the same seeding meet in the third round,

the team representing the even-numbered District shall

host the games in even-numbered years, while the team

representing the odd-numbered District shall host the

game in odd-numbered years. If the paired districts are

both even or both odd, the highest numbered district

shall host the game in even numbered years and the

lowest numbered district shall host the game in odd

numbered years.

5) For the semi-state round (fourth round), the champion

of region 1 will play the champion of Region 2 while the

champion of Region 3 will play the champion of Region 4.

The team representing the even-numbered Region shall

host the games in even-numbered years, while the team

representing the odd-numbered Region shall host the

game in odd-numbered years.

This looks to me like the District 4 winners in both 2A and 4A will be the losers in the new format.

St. X, Manual, Corbin all would have had home field advantage until the finals if they won their districts. But because of the blind draw, they lost that. Either of them will have to travel for the semifinals.

so district 8 region 4, should host the regional championship since this is the even numbered year... correct?

Does the term "clear as mud" come to mind.

Seems pretty confusing to me Watusi.

At the 2A level..it's really not too bad. The biggest difference is that each district plays "within" for the 1st 2 rounds. Not sure what brought this change around...other than overall cost of traveling. Keeping the teams within district..controls expenses and should raise overall profit.

Unfortunately...this also limits quality teams from advancing further into playoff system. In 2003/2004...there's no doubt that Belfry and Prestonsburg were probably the two best teams in 2A....but under this system, only one of those teams would have been able to advance beyond the 2nd round.

In some years...it may not matter....but in some circumstances, it appears that from a competition standpoint this system could actually water down overall play.

If Russell and Mercer advance as expected...they would meet in the State Quarters...with the winner facing Middlesboro, Breathitt, Les Co/ Sheldon Clark, Belfry, P-burg winner

This looks to me like the District 4 winners in both 2A and 4A will be the losers in the new format.

No, Josey, you have it wrong.

In the third round, the matchups will look like this in 2A

Western Semi State

D1 vs D2

D3 vs D5

Eastern Semi State

D4 vs D6

D7 vs D8

Mercer is D5 and that district winner plays D3 (Etowns district)

Russsell is in D6 and that district winner plays D4 (Corbin's district)

But all of this we have known for a long time, since the blind draw. What we didn't know is WHERE will these games be played and who has home field advantage. Now we do.

Yes. D8 has home field advantage, just like always in even numbered years.

So if I understand correctly......., example only, Corbin would travel to Russell.

Both of them even numbered districts but Russell is a higher numbered district and this is an even numbered year?

If both of them are District champs I don't think anyone has said who would host the game. Any answers out there.

My bad...I was looking at 1A :scared:

campbellfield is right. If you read #4 above, that is exactly how it would play out.

In other words if Corbin from D4 plays Russell from D6 in the regional championship game and both of them are #1 seeds from their regular season district play, then the higher seeded team hosts in even numbered years (2006) and Corbin would travel to Russell.

Gotcha.

But didn't you say something in another thread about the semis being moved to a neutral site.
