On a Serious Roll

As eluded to in last week's Notebook, Class 2A had another chance to make a statement in Week 2 and did not disappoint. Mayfield, CAL, Owensboro Catholic, and Danville all collected statement wins against highly ranked teams from higher classifications. Meanwhile Newport Central Catholic and Butler County took losses to favorited foes, but did so in the tightest of fashion. The lone disappointing Top 10 team was DeSales who fell to 6A Ballard, but to call a 2A team losing to a stout 6A team as a "disappointment" is really stretching it and a testament to the level this class has performed at this season.

 

The Hill Gets Steeper

The collection of victories for Class 2A have been very impressive, particularly the margins of some of those games, but no week will challenge some of the top contenders perhaps as much as Week 3. Mayfield is the flagship for the class and the winds have been strong in their favor to this point, but awaiting on the horizon is the black flag of 6A McCracken County in what should be the Cardinals stiffest test of the regular season. Danville has probably collected the best set of early season wins with their victories over 5A Southwestern and 3A Boyle County, but this week they take on 3A's 2nd Ranked Corbin Redhounds. Corbin is the most experienced team that Danville will have faced in this stretch. Newport Central Catholic has taken a couple losses already but this week they meet 3A #1 Belfry who many thinnk may be a Top 5 overall team in the entire Bluegrass State.

 

The Most Surprising 4-0 Team In Kentucky Decided Friday?

As mentioned in last week's Notebook, McLean County is off to a surprising start and they continued that start with a 16-7 win over Crittenden County. This week the Cougars draw 6A Muhlenberg County in a game that 99% of the state would normally skim right over on the KHSAA Scoreboard most years. This year I urge everyone to take a second to take notice. Muhlenberg County (just east of Madisonville if you are like me and curious) will host the game and enter with a shiny 3-0 record of their own. McLean County (Southeast of Henderson, Southwest of Owensboro) has not started 4-0 in a long time and a win would put them inn position to sit at a sharp 5-0 entering a matchup with Owensboro Catholic.

 

The Aces' Ace

No 2A team produces the individual stat monster quiet like Owensboro Catholic. The Aces' have had a seemingly endless run of Quarterbacks that put up video game numbers and often become household names before their careers end. It is fair to even think of OCath much like a High School equivalent to a program like California, Texas Tech, or Houston. With that said the 2016 Owensboro Catholic team is not short of a superstar talent, but this time the position is different. Let me introduce you to RB Vonn Williams. Williams was superb in Friday's upset of 5A #2 Owensboro rushing for 173 yards. Williams has 490 rushing yard through just three games.

 

Speaking of Rushing Yards

Fairly sure most readers of the Notebook know exactly who Mayfield's superstar RB is and he needs no introduction, but Trajon Bright showed exactly why he is one of the State's best rushers regardless of class. Bright went off against rival 3A Paducah Tilghman for 316 rushing yards and 3 TD's. Bright is averaging a hair above 200 rushing yards per game to this point despite only playing about a Half of action in his first two games.

 

One Game to Watch

Somerset vs. Hazard

 

The Briar Jumpers took their first defeat to 1A Beechwood and now set their sights on 1A #6 Hazard. The Bulldogs are a quality team with a flare for the dramatic, each of their early season wins have featured Second Half drama. Somerset needs some confidence heading into District play with Danville and LCA looming large, Hazard would be a nice feather in their cap from a confidence stand point.

 

 

One Player to Watch

QB Jake Dial, Metcalfe County

 

Dial is a duel threat QB who has gotten off to a hot start for the 2-1 Hornets. Metcalfe takes on a veteran and very solid 3A Adair County team and if they want any chance of an upset Dial will need to put up video game numbers.
