Marion scored on the first play from scrimmage on a long TD run by Trey Downs. Downs scored three more times.

 

Score now is 33-7 with 11:28 left in the 2ndQ. Lightning delay. My guess is this one gets called with the score standing as is.

Or maybe not — I've been told play will be resuming soon. I feel for the folks out there, but I had to take my leave. I've already been soaked twice, and the camera gear doesn't take too kindly to all that water either.

I'm not sure what to make of it totally. As far as Nelson is concerned, they didn't have an especially good year last year, missing the playoffs, and 18 seniors from that team are gone. Most everybody is new, plus they have a new head coach, and a new offensive system as they've switched from a pass-heavy offense to the option. And the new coach wasn't hired on until late in the game.

 

I would say Marion seems to have taken to their new coach and offensive system well. How they do against Bardstown next week will tell me a lot more about them.

I was surprised by this one

Egli left Nelson Co. football in very poor shape. The kids haven't been coached in years, particularly on defense. There was a shell of a weight-lifting program going on, too. Egli didn't give to feeder middle school programs the needed support. It's going to take some time to get the ship righted but I know the new coaches will care about the kids and work hard to get things corrected. But there are very few seniors so a lot of young kids are playing. They just need to trust the staff and keep working hard.
