June 1, 201610 yr Calling a Native American person an 'Indian' isn't okay. Kids are told to sit 'criss-cross apple sauce' instead of 'Indian-style'. Why does the federal government still have the Department Of Indian Affairs? Calling a black person 'colored' definitely isn't okay. Why do black people still have an organization called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? Calling an Asian person 'oriental' isn't okay. Why is it that you can find at least one oriental rug store in essentially every major city in the US? It isn't just a word...is it?
June 2, 201610 yr Saying it's "just a word" is simplistic. Words, in and of themselves without context or connotation, have no power. However, when the word is used in a derogatory manner then it's NOT just a word. This is pretty elementary. My brother can call me stupid but you can't. Right?

I don't think that fits here, unless we're inserting some horrible racial/ethnic/whatever epithet after "stupid."
June 2, 201610 yr I don't think that fits here' date=' unless we're inserting some horrible racial/ethnic/whatever epithet after "stupid."[/quote'] I was using it to show some people can say a word while others cannot. That bothers some but makes sense to me.
June 2, 201610 yr The one that goes gets me is the F word. You can say frick, f'ing or many other variations and its Ok.

June 2, 201610 yr I'm guessing the NAACP adopted their name a long time ago when the word colored was less insulting and used in more broad terms. I'm guessing they don't want to change the name because it has been around for so long and it isn't worth changing now. The word "colored" makes me cringe as much as the n word though. Nothing makes me more angry than being called an Uncle Tom or a Tom Tom as that has been the evolution of the word.

I hope when the upcoming society-dissolving cataclysm that Jesse James keeps talking about occurs, we can still always laugh about this. [video=youtube;ttmgR0e9-xA]
