Summer workouts

What is the standard with your program?

Get us started soccerfan000, what is the standard with your program?

I believe in some ways summer workouts are a waste of time unless you can continue them until practice starts. you go 3-4 days a week then take almost a month off so what does that accomplish, you get in shape then back to not being in shape.

Can high school coaches take their teams to the various "team" camps similar to what basketball teams do?

Do coaches spend time educating players on the role of food/nutrition? We don't want players out-eating their conditioning programs or alternatively failing to properly fuel the machine. I would think it goes hand-in-hand with strength and conditioning.

Sir, you are right but I do not believe they stress the importance of nutrition at least that's my opinion.

In my experience, the summer workouts were to let the coaches know who and how many players they could expect to see at tryouts and get a first impression of the athletes. Most players are playing club ball up until tryouts and beyond, so conditioning should rarely be an issue.

Summer workouts are good to keep players sharp until tryouts especially ones that don't advanced to USYSA Regionals or ECNL nationals. That way those kids are playing and getting touches. I think most coaches like to see some of the new kids that might be in their program earlier. Most of the top 10 teams in kentucky are doing workouts during the winter and all spring to give their kids more than the normal 2-3 days a week of club soccer.

I don't know any of the programs well enough to know if, "most of the top 10 teams in Kentucky" or any other teams are holding workouts in the winter and spring. I would guess for the top 20 teams in the state this is likely not very accurate. The top 20 teams likely have a large majority, or at least their top 9-12 players on top level club teams. The commitment level on these top club teams don't leave much, if any time for their players to participate with the high school teams "during the winter and all spring."

soccerfan000, can you name any "of the top 10 teams in Kentucky" that hold winter and all spring workouts?

Sacred Heart, Assumption, and Simon Kenton did workouts most of the winter and spring. Tates Creek, Owensboro Cath and west Jessamine have also had a number of workouts. This is also common with Lakota East, Mason and others in Cincy.

A number of these programs do workouts before school so their premier players can still attend all of their club stuff.

I know KHA doesn't allow their players to participate in HS workouts during Club season. Are other clubs different? Doubtful :)

I believe that tryouts are usually held after the dead period, this would be the second week of July. Most players are not playing club up until this point, the majority will be done with their club season at least a month before tryouts roll around.

Never heard of the KHA rule?

And I have never heard of teams holding winter training for HS. Guess we both learned something today!
