The "eye to eye" thing is sort of important as in "how is a rule interpreted?"

Has Coach Foust found another coaching position yet? I know AAU will be rapping up shortly. I wonder what he does then.

I heard Coach Foust moved back home. If he left NDA to pursue other opportunities I wonder why he hasn't landed a job yet, or even better yet, had a job when he left. I think Girls Basketball had 45 jobs to choose from when he stepped down.

He's still coaching AAU in NKY (my daughter's team) and still weighing options. I don't want to speak for him, but I'll say maybe he doesn't want to coach girls or even high school any longer. Just sayin...don't make assumptions that he isn't pursuing other opportunities because he hasn't landed a KY Girls High school job yet.

You can call his departure from ND whatever you want. But if you have ANY connections in the NKY bball world, we all know a lot of what happened there. Regardless what you think about him, it just wasn't a good fit with the NKY diocese rules and some of the parents at ND.

He has other options and he can coach my kid any day!

It has nothing to with the diocese because ND is not run by the diocese.

Okay then vertis or whatever that word is. Maybe Diocese was the wrong word then. I'm not Catholic. Whoever mandates and regulates that is what I'm talking about.

The rules that you are referring to are there because of the pedophile crisis that gripped the church a few years ago, and were created to try and keep inappropriate contact between minors and adults in a school situation to a minimum. They are fairly common sense rules in my opinion for anyone dealing with kids as a coach. I had not heard that was why he was asked to leave. Interesting....

The fact that you'd let him coach your daughter doesn't really say much. Look up Rick Butler from Sports Performance Volleyball in Chicago.

I know what they are in play for. I just think that some of them are ridiculous and can actually be a disadvantage for coaches. There are common sense rules, but there should also be common sense judgement when applying the rules. That was just one small part of it, so lets not get so caught up on that. Admin and parents were a big part too.

Wasn't trying to say much with my comment about coaching my daughter other than I approve of his coaching style and so do the rest of the good families on the AAU team we play for.

So please connect the dots on how Rick Butler applies to Foust? Are you making accusations?? Why would you pick that one guy (who obviously has issues) and bring it into this discussion???

Actually you brought it up by saying that he was asked to leave due to a vertis infraction, which in its nature means inappropriate contact with a minor by an adult. I said I had never heard that.

I point out Rick Butler because he is a known... commodity, and people still send their kids to his club/team to be coached by him because they think it will help their kid make their HS team or get a college scholarship. Keeping that in mind, someone saying they would send their kid to be coached by so and so doesn't really carry much weight in my eyes.

Inappropriate contact with a child is VERY broad. Theres the stuff that was going on with the church and then there is texting with your players to understand what might be going on with the team chemistry, ect. Both deemed "inappropriate" according to those guidelines. Not allowing to have only one coach in a gym with a team. That's one of the rules, but 99.99% percent of the time, my guess there's no "inappropriate" actions happening. So like I said, it's how you apply those rules. There are others on that list that I feel are normal interactions you take as a coach that are deemed "inappropriate" by vertis. I coach and do just about everything he was reprimanded for at his time at ND. So you can use "inappropriate contact" how you'd like, but it doesn't always mean the worst. It just makes for a good story.

And again, I mentioned letting my kid playing for him because I like the way he coaches and I think it was absolutely ridiculous the stuff he went through at ND with the goofy rules and some of the parents. JMO...it became a hassle to try and coach. Too many distractions.

Wow, OK... where do I begin. I guess at the beginning.

Virtus is there because Child sexual abuse is a worldwide public health issue. The catholic church recognizes this. Look around, Coaches abuse kids all the time. Teachers... Priests... Neighbors... etc. The rules developed by the catholic church regarding adult contact with a minor are there to combat bad people. Yours or Coach Foust's comfort with those rules isn't my concern. When You Take a JOB as a Coach of a Catholic Girls HS Basketball Team You Should Understand The Requirements. Are You really advocating that a coach call and or text his players individually? You can't be serious. SMH

I do find it ironic that a Dixie Fan is posing all these questions, and the loudest voice defending Foust, and person who seems to know they most about why he was let go from NDA, is an assistant coach at Highlands. Neither of whom were present for any of this. :)

Not following you on the bolded. No idea what you're talking about here. I'm not a Dixie fan or a Highlands assistant. AND he doesn't need a defense. He quit!

But to answer your question, yes, I call and text my players all the time. I see no issue with it and if the debacle hadn't have happened in the catholic church, my guess they'd have no problem with it. I call to make sure they are okay after an injury. I call or text when they didn't have a good practice to see what might have been bothering them. I call or text the leaders on the team to see what might be going on with the team chemistry or morale. I text them to see how their college visits went. I text them because I care about them and want them to know they have me on their side...even outside the lines. I couldn't coach any other way. So I won't be applying at a catholic school because I wouldn't want to be judged jor governed by rules that had to be put in place because bad people prior.

And you say "look at all the coaches that are indicted for whatever". What's that percent??? I'm sure there are way more coaches that coach and never get indicted for a thing. Anyone can look at the extreme exceptions and say "see, I told you about coaches!".

I'm really not even sure what your motive is yet. But I'll figure it out.

My motive? Dude, I have been responding to info you provided and in the process have been enlightened by you and others close to the situation. I am the Dixie Fan.... it's kind of obvious if you look at my avatar. Whoops, I guess they got rid of those... any way 6,630 post and I bet 6,000 of them are about Dixie in some way or another.

I am not indicting the coaching world. Hell I'm a retired coach. But since we've started down this rabbit hole I am pointing out the obvious which you seem to choose to ignore. If Coach Foust violated virtis rules and that was part of the reason he "quit", then you can't sweep that under the rug and act like its a silly rules thing. I had not heard that before today. Granted, most of what I am hearing on the side is second and third hand from parents at NDA, but I have learned of quite a few things that happened during his tenure that were more than adequate reasons for him to "quit". I think the fact that he suddenly left one of the top programs in the state for unemployment speaks volumes. He's your friend and fellow coach at Premier, I get it. You feel compelled to defend him. I might do the same if I were you.

Note* People who "Quit" don't tend to send emails about the program on a Friday and then have there school email accounts disabled on Saturday.

Good luck

This thread has served its purpose and reads are good stopping point. The Notre Dame job has been filled and the team is moving forward.

If anyone would like to start a thread about Coach Foust, the terms of his departure from Notre Dame, or his next move in coaching, feel free to start a new thread.
