If she's that fast, Cooper's track coach is missing the boat.......she should be running sprints on Saturdays even if she is on the softball team!

We've had this discussion on here before as well and I think that's where the questions are coming from. The way I score it is unless is a double steal situation, if an attempt is not made to get the runner out (defensive indifference) it is not a steal. An example may be runner on first and third and runner on first takes second without a throw. Not a steal. Not saying that is the cause here. She is very fast and I mentioned that during our game with Cooper.she recorded 1 steal against us and it wasn't even close.

We play many of these teams with many fantastic players but when I see these kind of stats, I say, "what" whether that is fair of me or not, that is my natural reaction. Great players to be sure!

IMO your example is not indifference and instead a stolen base.

 

The "indifference" ruling is designed for late game blowouts where the defense just doesn't try.

I never give our players a stolen base when there is 1st and 3rd and they don't throw down to the base at 2nd to get that runner so maybe I am incorrect.

She just moved here from Japan. I think she just hooked on to one of the Kaos teams in NKy. Kid is good. My daughter plays on a top five ASA travel team in the country. Only say that to let you know I've seen really good players. She is fast, obviously been super trained in Japan and can slap and hit. I'm most impressed with her defensive fundamentals. And again, I think she's only an 8th grader.

What's the difference on a double steal where they tried for the girl at third ? They didn't TRY for the girl at second yet she gets credit.

You can take the same kid, fastest in the state, and place her in different situations and her success rate and attempts will be different. You can run a 2.6 1st to home, but if the pitcher throws 60 and the catcher has a pop time of 1.7, you're not stealing 2nd and 3rd on consecutive pitches like you might against a pitcher who throws 48 and a catcher with a pop time of 2.6. Rarely does that have to do solely with the speed of the base stealer.

Absolutely true. However, the kid can only play against the teams she is scheduled to play against. That statement doesn't determine whether the kid is good or not or legitimately has all those stolen bases.

 

I can tell you that I would trust this coach's stats and I can tell you the kid is good. Did she get some of those against some avg pitchers, catchers and team...quite possibly. But that doesn't mean she didn't steal all the bases and she's not good. If they were playing a top 10 schedule in the state...you are all correct. Those numbers are probably down a little...and the stats would be managed the same way and would reflect the correct stats. But she is only playing the team that shows up in the other dugout. Doesn't mean she doesn't have that many steals or that it should have an asterisk beside it for some reason.

Agreed. Also one reason why I don't put much stock in high school stats, even if they are accurately kept. Way too much variation in quality of play for them to mean anything, other than as a reflection of the schedule a team played.

Will tell you and give props to Owen county catcher tonight as she was thrown out stealing second on a very close play. But she did score from second in the 7 th for a 2 to 1 win, on a short single to left.
