New York's Democratic attorney general (AG) made a chilling suggestion at an event he co-hosted this week: harsher penalties beyond fines for groups allegedly misleading the public on global warming. "Financial damages alone may be insufficient," Eric Schneiderman said during the event in New York City Tuesday. "The First Amendment does not give you the right to commit fraud." It's unclear if Schneiderman meant those "misleading" the public on global warming should be thrown in jail or maybe just do community service - though it's doubtful community service would be more "sufficient" than financial damages. Schneiderman was joined by more than a dozen attorneys general from Democratic states, some of whom promised to join New York in investigating ExxonMobil for allegedly misleading the public about global warming. Former Vice President Al Gore even showed up to apparently show how serious state prosecutors are about the issue. "Years from now, this meeting by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and his colleagues here today may well be looked back upon as a real turning point," Gore said, adding the government should go after commercial interests that have been "deceiving the American people, communicating in a fraudulent way, about the reality of the climate crisis and the dangers it poses." March 30, 201610 yr Totally chilling...if you disagree with me, I will try to have you jailed...this is America, not North Korea or Russia or Iran, right??
March 31, 201610 yr Not saying I agree with this, because I don't...but it may be more than just "if you disagree with me." It may be that the companies have done their own studies, and are well aware of the effects, and have been lying about it. Kinda like when a pharmaceutical lies about internal studies of side effects in order to get a drug approved. The difference though, and why I say I don't agree with it, is that the drug companies have to file stuff with the FDA under oath, they have a legal duty to be truthful. I don't know what duties Exxon Mobile has. I guess they are free to lie thru their teeth unless they have to file statements under oath for some reason or the other. The cig companies did the same thing for decades, and contributed to millions? of deaths. I don't think anybody went to jail though.
March 31, 201610 yr Author If a corporation misleading the public about global warming is a criminal offense we need to build some more jails for all the other corrupt corporations that mislead the public.
March 31, 201610 yr If a corporation misleading the public about global warming is a criminal offense we need to build some more jails for all the other corrupt corporations that mislead the public. Start with the elected and unelected public officials.
March 31, 201610 yr 1984ish The lack of the adjective 'anthropogenic' is notable. As such it would seem fraud was committed - he should be arrested.
March 31, 201610 yr If a corporation misleading the public about global warming is a criminal offense we need to build some more jails for all the other corrupt corporations that mislead the public. We could also start with the politicians that lie and mislead the public on just about everything they say. What this AG is suggesting is communistic.
