Rulebook says you are a pitcher if you are ON the rubber and a fielder if you are NOT on the rubber. 1 base for a pickoff attempt FROM mound i.e. a pitcher and 2 bases for a wild throw from a fielder (i.e. not on the rubber). The old saying "one from the mound two from the field" should really be "one from the rubber two from anywhere else."

March 2, 201610 yr Yep. Big difference, and all the more reason for the firstbaseman to be in the loop (besides saving his grill). Lefthanders get to have the fun with pickoff moves. I'm thinking taking the hat off is a signal to first base I'm coming over.
