Why though? If a player is excited for himself or mad at himself who is he taunting? What rule are the officials applying? I am not asking about if the player appears to be mad about a call. I am fine with that being called every time.

 

NFHS is VERY sensitive to taunting and potential issues associated with it. They err on that side in how they want the rules applied. Slamming a ball down CAN be taunting. Depends on a few factors.

Can't compare the two. One done in clear disgust, the other done in pure elation at the end of a game with a 0 on the clock. Apple's to oranges.

So they just make it up as they go? Kind of dumb. Why not just put in a rule that if you spike the ball for any reason it is an automatic T? Is there any way officials are calling it a T b/c they believe spiking the ball to be a T b/c of perception even though there isn't a specific rule?

 

I wasn't there last night, but this official "seemingly" made an error or made the game about himself. Neither are acceptable.

I dont want to hijack the thread that's obviously about the Grant/W-V game, but what on earth would Humphries be disgusted with? He just blocked a shot and then got fouled on the retrieval that could have helped ice the game. I guess he might have been frustrated he got fouled (doubtful) if was finally called, or maybe he might have been slamming the ball in reaction to the opponents fouling, I dont know...but "disgust" is not the correct description..I am guessing his reaction was celebratory as well.

You're missing something here.

 

They do not "make it up as they go." It's a judgement call - just like when there's contact - is it a foul or a play on? Judgement call.

 

You have to allow judgement on issues like this. It's not black and white like a foot on a line.

 

I can't speak to each official as to their thoughts on how to rule on this type of play. Some coaches rule with a tighter interpretation than others. I've said previously that I'll let a coach vent. I'll let them curse as long as it's just me and him hearing it (and it's not personal). Others will whack at the first curse word. Judgement and interpretation.

I wasn't calling him a bad kid at all. I know him and his family. I said that the first technical was for a hard dribble and that if he would have gotten a T for going to the crowd and "maybe taunting" that it would have been more legitimate. I don't think he realized that 0.8 seconds were left on the clock. Absolutely no paint job. I like him and hope he does well.

 

Sorry PP1. I am still upset over the call. I think it was the most outrageous, unnecessary technical that i have ever seen. I am still made about it and the team i was rooting for, won.
