generaldowns Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I was speaking with a sales rep from Riddell recently who was extolling the virtues of the Speed Flex model, which has been out for a year or so. What do others think here? Is that helmet, which retails anywhere from $400-500, that much better than anything else available for HS players?
jessepinkman Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 There is no helmet that, scientifically proven, prevents all concussions. I don't care what the helmet salesman says.
generaldowns Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 There is no helmet that, scientifically proven, prevents all concussions. I don't care what the helmet salesman says. Of course. That's a given. My question was, is this one significantly better than the other models in greater circulation? It may be that so few programs in KY have used it, that no one can speak with experience on the subject.

uk#1fan Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-football-high/xenith-helmet-technology-321334.html Xenith is a good one I know several kids that wear them.
WideZone Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I hear great things about Xenith helmets. My nephew wears a Xenith helmet and shoulder pads. He is a huge fan.

Harry Doyle Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I hear great things about Xenith helmets. My nephew wears a Xenith helmet and shoulder pads. He is a huge fan. First class for sure. I've seen several kids choose them off the shelf over anything from Riddell, Schutt, etc. One criticism early on I believe was their face masks would chip really easy (the paint), but that I think that has been corrected. As with any new product/company on the market; every little thing isn't always perfect. Then again, older companies aren't either.
Pete W Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Facemasks aren't painted, they have a vinyl coating. If the coating is torn up, scraped up from use, then they are usually thrown away. They can be reconditioned by stripping down to bare metal and recoated. At Fern Creek we switched from white masks to black last year and all of the used helmets had the masks reconditioned and recoated, it is an expensive process and for standard masks a new one is only about $2-$3 more. We had Xeniths the first year they were available to high school market when I was still at Manual. We didn't have issues with the face masks, but it was a different style helmet and many players didn't like it at first and some head shape issues where it pressed against the temples on certain guys. Xenith altered it a little and our players seem to find it more comfortable now. With the Xenith bonnet system it does a have a little break in period where it seems to mold itself to the players head and fit even better after a week or so.
