Newport vs Holy Cross Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Anybody have any details on how the scrimmage went unfortunately I didn't get the chance to stop by.

Holy cross was very strong on offence and defence. I think they scored 4 times, Newport did not score against them.

They scored 4 times on Newport's varsity team? Or are we talking about 4 touchdowns against the Varsity, JV, and Freshman squads?

The varsity & jv scored 4 times. And fros team scored 2 times.

Newport's JV squads normally don't fare to well so I'm sure Holy Cross was able to score at will. If the varsity D hasn't improved at all since last season that will be their achille's heal this season as well.

In the first half, HC scored on the 3rd play on a very nice catch by #25 on a well thrown ball from Abeling. After that, no one scored the rest of the half. Newport did drive down to near the goal line but did not score.

In the 2nd half, frosh were scrimmaging on one end and the JV started out scrimmaging on the other. I think the varsity then did come back in but I did not see much of it. It was a pretty even matchup.

HC is big across the front on both sides of the ball.

Wilfong ran pretty well for Newport in the first half and was the majority of their offense.

Wilfong will be a force to reckon with this year if he stays away from the injury bug

I think it was 1 td to none HC in the varsity action. HC was pretty big upfront like cshs said and was getting some pressure on the qb. The o line for Newport has to get better but they didnt look to bad. They need some of the receivers to step up and make some plays, they dont seem to have a ton of talent this year compared to last years skill guys. They will rely on Hesch and Wilfong a lot this year. D seems to be better from what I saw, well at least the run D looked good. Pass D was so so and looks like it needs to improve alot.

On a side note, Newport looked to have a good looking running back on the freshman squad and HC had a really nice QB for their frosh. He had good size, speed and agility and could throw the ball well. He could be a good one for them.

I believe Newport's freshman running back is Brandon Tucker

So it may be a little tougher for Hesch to throw 9 TD's in a game this year?

Well of course it will be a lot harder for Hesch to throw 9 TD's in a game again. He lost his top 3 recievers in Thomas, Huston, and Atkins and the leading returning receiver from last year only had 6 receptions.

Holy Cross looked very good yesterday. They continally pressured Newport's QB, and put some good licks on him, even though they weren't supposed to. Coach Schlarman didn't look to happy about it, and neither would I.

Newport also looked good, but the passing game was non existant. They spread it out alot and tried to go downfield, but Holy Cross coverage plus pressure equalled few pass completions.

I look to see great things from both teams. Good luck to both.

The receivers will be a question mark for a while because of the inexperience. Hesch will need some reliable receivers for Newport to get anywhere in the postseason hopefully they come around by then.

The Newport varsity looked very soft upfront to me. They just could'nt stop the penetration by the HC defence to give the QB time to find his recievers.

If Spencer County puts 9 guys in the box again, Hesch will throw for 12.
