Sad Songs Really Do Say So Much. What's Some of Your Most Favorite Sad Songs Ever?

Featured Replies

Strangely enough, when I am feeling a little on the down side, I want to listen to sad songs. Maybe I want to be reminded that so many others have felt the same sadness that I feel. I really do love a good sad song and there have been many great ones. What's one or two of your favorites?

I'll start with this classic.

Here's the great Glen Campbell doing the same song. So poignant, so painfully sad, especially considering Mr Campbell's current state. He does a fabulous job on this tune.Such a brilliant musician...

I can remember when, as just a very little boy, hearing this song on the radio and feeling sad. To this day, it makes me sad each and every time I listen to it. Very, very, sad song but very beautiful. BTW, the song was written by Maurice and Robin Gibb, the twin brothers who themselves both died way too soon.

In a little while from now

If I'm not feeling any less sour

I promise myself to treat myself

And visit a nearby tower

And climbing to the top

Will throw myself off

In an effort to

Make it clear to whoever

Wants to know what it's like When you're shattered

Left standing in the lurch at a church

Were people saying, My God, that's tough

She stood him up

No point in us remaining

We may as well go home

As I did on my own

Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday

I was cheerful, bright and gay

Looking forward to who wouldn't do

The role I was about to play

But as if to knock me down

Reality came around

And without so much as a mere touch

Cut me into little pieces

Leaving me to doubt

Talk about, God in His mercy

Oh, if he really does exist

Why did he desert me

In my hour of need

I truly am indeed

Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that

There are more hearts broken in the world

That can't be mended

Left unattended

What do we do

What do we do

Alone again, naturally

Looking back over the years

And whatever else that appears

I remember I cried when my father died

Never wishing to hide the tears

And at sixty-five years old

My mother, God rest her soul

Couldn't understand why the only man

She had ever loved had been taken

Leaving her to start

With a heart so badly broken

Despite encouragement from me

No words were ever

And when she passed away

I cried and cried all day

Alone again, naturally

Alone again, naturally

Goodbye to you my trusted friend

We've known each other since we were nine or ten

Together we've climbed hills and trees

Learned of love and ABC's

Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die

When all the bird's are singing in the sky

Now that the spring is in the air

Pretty girls are everywhere

Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the hills that we climbed

Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa, please pray for me

I was the black sheep of the family

You tried to teach me right from wrong

Too much wine and too much song

Wonder how I got along

Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the sky

Now that the spring is in the air

Little children everywhere

When you see them I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the wine and the song

Like the seasons have all gone

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the wine and the song

Like the seasons have all gone

Goodbye Michelle, my little one

You gave me love and helped me find the sun

And every time when I was down

You would always come around

And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye Michelle, it's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the sky

Now that the spring is in the air

With the flowers everywhere

I wish that we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the stars we could reach

Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the stars we could reach

Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the wine and the song

Like the seasons have all gone

All our lives we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the hills that we climbed

Were just seasons out of time

This doesn't stem from the Bengals game Saturday does it?

Yesterday would have been my mom's 83rd birthday. I listen to this song every year on her birthday and Mother's Day. Tears swell up everytime I hear it has they are now just thinking about it.

I play this one for my father who passed away in 1993.

I repressed the sadness for awhile. It took the form of anger at first. I guess some of the sadness came surfaced the other night. :) Nah, I've just always loved me a good sad song.

That's very sweet. Thanks for sharing that, NWO.

The Roy Clark "Yesterday When I Was Young" and the Gilbert O' Sullivan "Alone Again" get to me every time I hear them.

The Eric Clapton song about the death of his son and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" by Roberta Flack.
