Mancel Elam resigns @ Fulton Co.

Featured Replies

Local sports news on WPSD tonight reported that Fulton Co head coach Mancel Elam resigned yesterday. Elam took over the Pilots last year and led the Pilots to a 6-5 record, their first winning season since 1998. Reasons for his departure were not given but the report said that more on this story would be given on the 10 PM newscast. Fulton Co. made huge strides under Elam last year, he was a former football star that played on the Pilots 93 team that upset then AA Mayfield and won a 1A region title. He also played at Murray State. Fulton Co has had numerous head football coaches resign after 1 year or less over the last several years.

I remember Elam. He was a huge fullback that took Fulton Co. to the Class A semi-state in 1993, where they lost to Bardstown 7-0. My brother was the quarterback of that Bardstown team. The River had overflowed that year and the field was a solid sheet of ice. It was the coldest game I had ever been to. Keep the updates coming if you don't mind, 'Pick.

The river hadn't overflowed ... it had rained a lot and Fulton County's field wasn't in very good shape. The field was more of a mudhole than anything else. On a dry field, the game would have probably been a track meet. As it was, Bardstown managed to score before the field became unplayable.

What can you add to this topic? You are often in the know, anything to add?

So the next guy will be their sixth coach in four years?

I'm told that Elam's pay was cut, prompting his resignation. Why, I'm not sure.

It's sad, if true. The Pilots were one of western Kentucky's best stories last fall, going 6-5 after winning only six games over the previous five seasons after bringing back one of the best players in school history to hopefully stop the revolving door of coaches. They have some talent coming back as well.

If you count the guy twice that took over twice as interim coach ... yes.

If you watch the news, they have all kinds of issues with the board and superintendent.

Actually, the entire school system has some issues. It seems like everyone that gets there, that isn't from there, can't wait to get out.

I was talking to a friend of mine that knows some of the coaches at the Calloway Co school system and he said they are trying to work out a position for Elam at the school for defensive coord. Could be a nice thing for the calloway folks.

McKeel at Calloway and Elam are both excellent young coaches. Would be a great hire for them!

Fulton Co, is a mess...I know several teachers and administators who have bolted out the door for other jobs. It's not the kids but the super and BOD from what I hear. What does it say when you cut the football coach who played and bled for Fulton county and instilled pride in the program last fall...you got me???

Yeah, there is no doubt he wasn't making that good to begin with, it being a small size school and all that. It is truly a big loss for this program. I am sure the pay is a lot better at calloway, you got to do what you got to do. Pretty sad that a guy that really whole-heartedly wanted to make this program the best it can be gets dumped on like this.

Sounds exactly like the situation in Campbell County last year.

Seems like a school with 6 coaches in 4 years, some flags would be raised with parent's and site based councils in Fulton Co. At some point, it would become apparent that it was not the coaches nor the kids causing the issues...
