I've been using the ones that came with my iPhone 6 that I got about a year ago, but it seems that there's been a short somewhere developed in the wire.

 

It's probably not surprising, given I use my earbuds much more heavily than most people to be able to listen to music, podcasts and other audio files. In addition, I use them quite frequently with my laptop and tablet for watching TV/movies and such on the web, and I also use them for most phone calls, as I have trouble hearing the phone without them when making calls.

 

Anyway, since whatever happened to them happened, it seems certain movements of the wires will trigger a podcast to start on my phone, or when connected to my laptop, it will trigger iTunes to start up with a song. On my phone, it causes dropped calls right and left, with a podcast starting up, and sometimes the phone's voice control feature to activate.

 

It seems new earbuds are in order since that is the common thread between the two issues. Any suggestions for good ones? Ideally ones that have the same pause/start and volume control on the wire the way the Apple ones do?

I have a pair of these (not with the volume control, though). They are the truth.

Their one downside is this: The 3mm jack is L-shaped instead of straight. This is fine except if you keep your phone in your pocket then the wire has to bend at a weird angle and it can wear out.

Set a budget, then decide. Much easier that way.

They are Bluetooth so no stupid wires going crazy all over the place.

If its in your budget, anything with the name Bose on it will serve you well. Best money you will spend. 100+ dollars for earbuds is pretty steep, but they will last you forever and you won't be disappointed.

IMHO these are the best bang for the buck. Quality sound, durable product, and the pause/volume/talk features you're looking for.

 

Pretty sure they still give a life time warranty. I have had a pair of 50/50 for 7 years. One of the ears quit working at 5 years. They sent me a new pair.

I'm not big on earbuds, I use headphones. But I would look into sennheiser or akg. I know they both offer earbuds, I'm just not familiar with that end of their market. They are both two of the top headphone developers around though. I have a pair of sennheisers that I wouldnt trade for the world. Excellent headphones.

I'm willing to go $30 or less. I'm sorry, but they're going to get abusive use of about 5 hours a day, if not more. To pay 80 bucks — let alone $150-250 or more like some goobers do — is out of the question. It's like those morons who buy expensive Oakley or Ray-Ban sunglasses and attempt to tell me, "they're worth it; just be gentle with them."

I have legit, high-end headphones for listening to vinyl music, so I know what makes good headphones. If there's no decent option out there for a damned phone, I can always get a converter to go from analog to digital.

Skull Candy ear buds are right in your budget then. You can get any of them on line, or Walmart carries several models like Smokin' Buds 2 and Ink'd.

Thank you for the recommendations....just had a pair of JVCs die on me at work this morning ( less than 3 months old ).

@Jim Schue if you are looking for something $30 and under that you don't care to abuse, look no further than monoprice. You can probably get a pair for $10 and they will be as good or better than anything you'll find for $30

If you can up your budget to $49 these Sennheiser buds have really good sound quality. I've had a pair for about 4 years.

Sennheiser makes excellent headphones, I have three pairs over over their ear headphones. But it appears Jim plans on destroying whatever he gets in a timely fashion lol. I wouldn't recommend sennheiser to anyone planning on destroying them, that's injustice to a quality headphone.
