Destination Coaching Jobs

Featured Replies

Name the schools that you feel are destination coaching jobs for anyone who lands there. Doesn't include a coaches alma mater, simply places that if you get a job there you either get fired, retire, or go to the NFL.

My List:

ACC: Florida St., (Clemson is rising to this level)

B1G: Ohio State, Michigan

Big 12: Texas, Oklahoma

Pac 12: USC, (Stanford is also rising to this level)

SEC: Alabama, LSU

Indep: Notre Dame

Obviously there are others out there that are big time jobs, but I believe these jobs stand above the rest.

Florida is a destination job. Its the biggest omission from your list. It is a bigger job than LSU IMO, as well as FSU, Oklahoma, and arguably Michigan. Of all the jobs out there it may have the best mix of tradition, money, talent pool, and location in the country. Its also in the SEC east.

Probably Georgia as well, doesn't have the history of others, but hard to really justify leaving Georgia for any other job.

I don't see Stanford ever becoming one, academic requirements are too hard.

Penn State (though sanctions may kill it)

Could argue Auburn and Tennessee. I know Kiffin left, but it was for USC where he had cut his teeth.

I omitted Florida just because I don't see a college coach seeing Florida as a final destination, but I certainly think they are in the conversation. But IMO LSU is a much better job than Florida, I think FSU is better, Oklahoma is definitely better, and Michigan is hands down a better job. LSU and FSU, I will listen too when compared to Florida, but I don't think Florida is even on the same level as Oklahoma and Michigan.

If you are successful at Florida you aren't leaving to go somewhere else...unless you get caught having an affair.

Success at Florida is as good as anyplace in the nation.

How so? Florida has three titles in the last 20 years. It pays as well as any job.

Way more history and much more in state talent than LSU.

OU and Michigan have the history but don't have the location or talent base in state.

FSU doesn't spend what UF is willing to spend. Worse conference.

I hate UF but it's a top five job to me.

This is such a subjective question and I think each person has his or her own opinions on each and every school. What are your top 5 besides Florida if you don't mind me asking?

Good list. I agree with Grant though,,not sure UF is a destination gig Spurrier left for NFL and Meyer faked a heart attack......I jest. I would add Michigan and USC.

Leaving for the NFL is nothing. Coaches have left USC, Miami, OU, etc for the NFL. If Saban was 55 he might leave Bama to try the NFL again. Where you're at means little when you get the itch to try a harder league.

Meyer is another story but he didn't directly leave UF for OSU. And had he not ruined his program their, hard to say if he would have even if he had still been coaching when OSU came open.

USC hasn't attracted to top of the line coach this millenium.

No one knew about how good Carroll was, he was about their fifth choice.

And yet Florida has hired Ron Zook and a guy at Colorado St?

McElwain was very highly regarded. Muschamp was a "sure thing".

Kiffin hadn't stayed anywhere long enough as a HC for anyone to know. Sark was mediocre at Washington.

I'm sure McElwain was highly regarded, but no one knew about him until he went to Florida. When Urban Meyer went to Ohio State, when Nick Saban went to Alabama, when Jim Harbaugh went to Michigan, everyone knew who these guys were before they landed there. McElwain needed Florida to become known and that, I feel, is the difference.
