2015/16 10th Region Girls Preview

Basketball season is back in the 10th region as well as throughout the entire state. Mason County will look to repeat as region champs but several other region teams will look to knock off the Lady Royals from their throne. Here’s a look at the 10th Region.

Team Rankings:

1.Mason County (23-12): The Lady Royals will look to defend their region title from last season. Mason County had their season ended in the semi-finals of the KHSAA Sweet 16 girls basketball tournament where they lost to Allen County-Scottsville 49-42. Mason County had only one player that averaged double digit in scoring, Whitney O’Mara, who will return for her junior season for the Lady Royals.

2.Campbell County (22-11): Campbell County knows what it takes to defeat Mason County as they came within 5 points both times they played last season, including the semi-finals of the 10th region tournament. Campbell County returns all three of their leading scorers from last season, Taylor Clos (15 PPG), Taylor Jolly (14 PPG) and Kylie Kramer (11 PPG). With those returning and the experience they have, they most certainetly defeat Mason County for a region title.

3.George Rogers Clark (21-11): The Lady Cards fell to the Lady Royals 51-47 in the 10th region championship game last season, coming up short of making it to the KHSAA Girls Sweet 16. Good news for the Lady Cards is that they return one of their leading scorers from a year ago, Sydney Anderson who averaged 11 points a game. Depth, Size and Rebounding will hurt the Lady Cards this season but they can shoot it and play good defense will keep them in games and win games.

4.Scott (20-10): The Lady Eagles came up short last season when they fell to GRC 49-48 in last year’s regional semi-final game. Scott returns 3 of their 4 top scorers from last season, Lexie Stapletone (13 PPG), Holly Kallmeyer (11 PPG), Anna Clephane (14 PPG). Scott has the depth and experience to win basketball games and win this region.

5.Bishop Brossart (14-13): The Lady Mustangs didn’t make it out of the district tournament, losing to Campbell County 50-41 in the first round of the 37th district tournament. The Lady Stangs have enough size and experience to make some noise this season.

6.Bracken County (19-11): Bracken County has one of the best if not the best player in the region in Bailey Cummins who was averaging close to 24 points a game last season and with her returning, they are more than capable of upsetting teams and winning a regional title.

7.Bourbon County (18-13): The Lady Colonels had a good season last year but it didn’t go as well as they had hoped, losing the district championship game and getting bounced in the first round of the region tournament to Mason County. The Lady Colonels return one of their leading scorers from last season, Haleigh Yazell (11 PPG) and have some good young talent and size to go along with Haleigh.

8.Nicholas County (11-16): The Lady Jackets only won 1 of their last 6 games last season and falling in the first round of the district tournament to Harrison County. They return only one of their leading scores from a year ago, Grace Kiskaden (10 PPG) but they have other experienced players to go along with her who all play hard for Coach Letcher.

9.Montgomery County (8-20): The Lady Indians had one of the worst year’s in school history only winning 8 games. 8th Grader (7th grader last season) Kennedy Igo was one of the leading scorers for Montgomery County at 13 points a game.Sarah Arnett the leading scorer for the Lady Indians also returns, she averaged 15 points a game. Lady Indians have a new head coach in John High. Montgomery County also has TRADTION as we all know.

10.Pendleton County (14-11): Pendleton County came up short losing 67-64 to Robertson County, formerly known as Deming, in the first round of the district tournament. Pendleton County returns Makayla Bishop who averaged 16 points a game last season. Pendleton County also has a new coach in Paige Bowling.

11.Robertson County (15-13): Robertson County started last season off good but then it went hay-wire win, lose, win, lose repeat and repeat but they did win 3 of their final 5 games, one of those wins, was 67-64 over Pendleton County in the opening round of the district tournament. Then they lost the district championship game and was rewarded with a date with powerhouse Campbell County who showed no-mercy defeating the Lady Devils 97-60 in the opening round of the 10th region tournament.

12.Harrison County (10-21): The Fillies struggled mightly last season. Good news for them in 2015/16, is that they return both leading scorers from last season, Madison Philpott (11 PPG) and Taylor Reffett (10 PPG).

13.Augusta (14-13): Augusta, heading into January 15th game against Bracken County, the Lady Panthers were 9-5 and had won 8 straight but once they hit the January 15th game with Bracken County that’s all she wrote as they would only win 5 more from their on out but they would upset Bracken County in the district tournament 38-37 to advance to the district title game and region tournament.

14.Paris (10-19): The Lady Hounds struggled last season, 3 of their 29 games was decided by 9 points or fewer, the rest were blowouts. Kailee Fench, one of their leading scorers from last season at 12 PPG returns for her sophomore year.

15.Calvary Christian (5-19): Much like several other teams in the region, Calvary struggled, infact they only won 1 out of their last 7 games and didn’t make it out of the district tournament last season. With them losing their leading scorer, Dayne Merkley (12 PPG) this season don’t look that good for the Lady Cougars.

16.St. Patrick (4-23): 4 wins is all St. Patrick could put up last season. St. Patrick didn’t even have a single player that averaged double digit scoring, the highest scorer they had averaged 7 points a game.

Top 10 Players:

1.Bailey Cummins (Bracken County): The leading scorer in the region last season at 23 points a game. She also shot 31% from 3 and grabbed 7 boards a game, returns for her final year as a Lady Bear as she will look to help Bracken County win a regional championship.

2.Taylor Clos (Campbell County): Leading scorer for Campbell County last season at 15 points a game. She played a big roll in Campbell’s success last season and will look to do the same this season.

3.Alexis Stapleton (Scott): Averaging 12 points a game last season for the Lady Eagles. Alexis will be one of several players that Coach Klette will go too this season.

4.Whitney O’Mara (Mason County): With a region championship and a semi-final appearance you’d think that Mason County would have the top player in the region? Right?, Nope. Whitney comes in at #4 but don’t let that fool you, she knows how to get it done and will get it done again for the Lady Royals this coming season.

5. Taylor Jolly (Campbell County): Another player for Coach Menefee that averaged 14+ points a game last season. She among several other players from last year’s team will look to do what they can to win a region title.

6.Anna Clephane (Scott): She will be the main horse that makes this Lady Eagle team run. Leading them in scoring last season at 14 points a game.

7.Sydney Anderson (George Rogers Clark): Averaging just 12 points a game for the Lady Cardinals last season, she was the leading 3 point and free throw shooter for them last season. 39/109 – 36% from 3 (yes they had more players that averaged more, but they didn’t take no where near as many attempts as she did). 72% from the charity stripe.

8.Kennedy Igo (Montgomery County): 8th grader Kennedy Igo, was one of the leading scorers from last season’s team, averaging 14 points a game.

9.Emily Schultz (Bishop Brossart): Played in all 27 games for the Lady Stangs last season, she returns and will look to be the leader of this year’s Brossart team.

10.Sarah Arnett (Montgomery County): Leading scorer for the Lady Indians returns for another year. Sarah will look to up hear average of 15 points a game last season.

I would definitely put Bracken in the top 5! I believe your top 5 is more accurate. It is preseason rankings though, nothing to live or die by. People are getting so caught up in Mason and Campbell, they are overlooking other teams. Overall I believe the 10th region this year is really strong. To have the teams that are in their top 5, or 6 since Bracken is put there, everyone will have to bring their A game. Sleep on teams like Scott, GRC, and Bracken then you will be hit with a rude awakening.

Will Silver Grove field a team this year?

Id say no, They were going to try to build up the middle school program last season and possibily this season from what I had heard earlier in the year. But you know how rumors are.

Need to say no more!! I figured they would since they had a schedule on Riherds.

Very surprised that Kramer from Campbell is not on the list. I don't think there are ten players in the region that should be ranked ahead of her.

Kramer is a heck of a player......

Another fine preview..well done

BGP has done it again. Great work on these region reviews!
