It wouldn't be harmful...but how exactly would it improve the poverty situation in eastern Kentucky? Just take the money saved and hand it out? That's not going to be enough to help anyone.

True, I think we have too many counties...but even if they were reduced to 5...it wouldn't change the level of poverty in this state. Cutting counties to 100 or 80 or 60 or whatever is like chasing windmills...it gives people something to rant about but 1) it's never going to happen 2) even if it did, the change would be negligible.

 

IMO to poorer regions with even less representation would be pushed further to the outside. You think Lee County would be better taken care of and poverty in Beattyville reduced if it was combined with Madison and Estill County?

And I don't see how Beattyville would get overall less representation, barring another major makeover in the house district gerrymandering. Those areas of the county would be represented under a reorganized county fiscal court.

We need to start with targeted education in these counties...technical education for those that aren't going to go to college.

 

Do what ever we can at state level to attract jobs to those areas, even if it means corporate incentives for investment.

 

Put more than lip service into ending the cycle of drug use in those counties, treatment is a must for those that want it. Jail time for those that sell drugs not just probation and back on the street.

 

If housing is needed in some communities then housing and infrastructure needs to be put in place to raise the standard of living and to attract investment into those communities.
