Trinity/Highlands 7 on 7 Tuesday, any info?

Featured Replies

The most curious thing is it was 7 on 8 everytime Trinity was on offense. Apparently it is normal for the Cincy and Northern Ky teams to play eight on defense during these workouts. .....

I've never noticed NKY teams playing 8 defenders. Must be new.

NKY teams that run a 3-5 have 8 defenders. That is why it is 7 on 8. This is not a new thing.

The 3-5-3 teams will rarely drop eight into coverage. Most of the time one of the LBs will sit at the line of scrimmage. 8 men are on the field, just not dropping into coverage every play. They can drop eight though which leaves only 3 rushers to the QB.

The Trinity d-backs came together better on this day. Great strides since the U of L tourney. Williams is learning. Now if he can locate his helmet...he may stay out of the doghouse :D

LaSalle has some athletes but I think they showed a lack of self control or discipline at times which will cost them against Moeller, Elder and Cincy St.X. Highlands has a couple of good receivers, one with some size similar to the CovCath player Trinity saw last week. Withrow has some speed guys and will make some noise in Cincy.

Trinity played from 5PM until 8PM. The JV or second string got in some good work but the first team offense really shined.

The most curious thing is it was 7 on 8 everytime Trinity was on offense. Apparently it is normal for the Cincy and Northern Ky teams to play eight on defense during these workouts. Trinity stayed with 7 on defense forcing more individual responsibility on the defenders. At times, the opposition had a blitzing end run by the QB at full speed. The 4 second rule was sporadically enforced. It was like street basketball, you had to call the coverage sack on yourself.......no spearing and very few knockdowns during the 3 hours. No fights and very few stare downs. Overall, very well organized and the 30 minute matches stayed on time.....no breaks.....

I didn't see Highlands drop 8, or 7 or even 6 into coverage. They often had one inside linebacker go into the backfield towards the qb (but did not interfere with the qb) and the other covered the running back. If he stayed in, so did the lber. If he went out, the lb went with him (usually into the flat). I did see Withrow drop all defenders as soon as the ball was hiked.

I agree that the Trinity d backs looked very good when they were playing against Highlands (I didn't watch them much when they were against LaSalle or Withrow however).

If you wanted your players to get a bunch of reps, you got it last night. As mentioned, no breaks and fast tempo the whole time. As mentioned in an earlier post, T's qb looked good and got almost all (maybe all) of the reps with the first team O. Their receivers ran crisp routes. Did many of them get much varsity playing time last year? They looked seasoned.

Highlands somewhat "hurt" itself by constantly changing receivers and alternating the qb spot between Draper and Cecil on offense and constantly changing d backs. Dale has lots of questions to get answered at the qb, receiver and d back areas and I'm sure wanted to look at a lot of people against some very good competition.

Thank you for the insight. If I was a football coach I might have known that...

Only one, Flynn.

Dixie plays a 3-5 now too BTW, or at least they started too after the second game of the season. With the personel we have coming up, I think it will be the choice of our base D again, though it looks more to the naked eye like a 4-4 at times.

CCH also plays a 3-man front now. My comment was that I had not noticed 8 players on D during 7 on 7s.

Any word on Mcgraw, Jr safety? When healthy he is top notch.

Word is Greg is done with football because of his back injuries

Oh.. my bad, I didn't read your previous post correctly.;)

Withrow and LaSalle both looked good. .

A receiver for Withrow committed to Purdue today.
