As usual NASCAR gets it wrong based on precedent.

 

Gordon wrecked Bowyer two years ago at Phoenix when Bowyer was still in running for the Chase title. Similar in that Gordon was lap or laps down and hit Bowyer for payback, knocking him out of contention.

 

The difference is Bowyer was completely eliminated from competing for the championship as there was just one race left and he mathematically couldn't win the championship even if he won Homestead.

 

Logano still has two races left and is not mathematically eliminated.

 

Big difference. And shows why Gordon's hit was much worse than Kenseth's, given the circumstances.

 

Gordon was fined and docked points. No suspension.
