Could not agree more. KHSAA's method, blind draw is a cheap way out. Nothing wrong with seeding the teams, rewarding the teams that play a strong schedule, winning against good teams though out the season. 10-0 and 7-0 results in the qt finals is embarrassing to KHSAA.

 

Injuries took their toll, but overall a good season for NDA, Congratulations.

 

Good luck to Sacred Heart, they have a great program. The potential for the Sacred Heart Vs Owensboro Catholic final should be an entertaining match.

It seems the KHSAA takes the "cheap way out" more often than not. Too bad the schools don't rise up and demand changes to the "blind draw" method.

 

My only concern is if they would seed, they would depend on Coach's poll instead of a committee truly doing research and getting at least the top 4 correct.

 

I am not a soccer person but I do know NDA has been a constant in the state tourney for the past few years. They are always in the mix. The blind draw seems to bite them as much as it does the volleyball Pandas. Just seems so unfair these girls end up T-5th with their quarterfinal loss as opposed to State Runner Up if teams are seeded and seeds hold.

 

Good luck to SHA. Too bad about their volleyball team, ranked 9th in the country, and not even in their own state tournament because of the messed up playoff system in place.

The draw allows for the underdog to make it farther in some aspects, which is sort of the fun to high school sports. Anyone remember when the state final was a repeat of the all A final a few years back? I bet that wasn't predicted by anyone.

Yes. All games are a blind draw in basketball unlike soccer that has the first round selected and rotated due to geographical situations.

I agree regarding the coach's polls...they are a terrible way to seed anything. (example in volleyball NDA is ranked in top 20 in the entire country but 5th in our own state in the coach's poll).

 

There is a way to do this and that is to select a committee of people that have no interest in the sport other than they are supporters (club soccer coaches, parents of former players who are educated, former coaches, current/former officials, etc). Have the committe members commit to seeing all of the teams in the top 10 at least 3 times in a season (coach's poll Top 10 because the real top 4 teams are usually someplace in the top 10) and truly rank them. The KHSAA takes the rankings of the committee and averages them and, from that, should have the top 4 seeds. Put them as you would in a truly seeded bracket (#1/#4 in upper bracket and #2/#4 in lower) and then blind draw the rest of the brackets. Problems occur if one of the Top 4 seeds get beaten in their region (volleyball top 4 are Assumption, Mercy, NDA, Sacred Heart with Assumption and Sacred Heart being the same region...this occurs every year so a solution to volleyball's problem with the blind draw would have to be a little different than soccer's) but I am not sure if that is a problem with soccer??

 

This is just one idea I have, I am sure there are others with ideas on this. The problem is the KHSAA doesn't care.

 

Just very unfortunate that the soccer state championship game is not truly a test of the two best teams. I know upsets occur and if a team that is blind drawn into the tournament beats one of the top 4 seeds then, by all means, they should advance. But in the current system, two of the top teams (from what I read because I don't know) played in the quarter finals (SHA vs NDA) and the winner will face much lesser competitition, as opposed to greater, as they move towards the championship match.

The blowouts in the state qtrs every year are silly, but I don't know If there is a practical way to fix it. Regions 13-15 typically are on the wrong end of those results. Can't have an E.Ky h.s. going to Owensboro or Bowling Green on a Tuesday night in round 1.

 

LC beat NDA and OC beat SH once already this year. Some quarter finals games were a dud, should at least be a legit state championship game.

I don't know why KHSAA doesn't make arrangements to play all State Tournament games at one or two neutral sites, same as they do for the boys and girls BB State Tournament. Aren't there some nice, non-high school facilities in the Lexington area (central location), UK, Transy, how about moving it back to Georgetown College now that they have turf? NKU has a perfect facility but not centrally located. But then again the girls State BB tournament was held at Western KY for years, not the most central location in the state.

Tates Creek's facility for one is old, outdated and the turf is years over due needing replaced. KHSAA can and should do better then this.

I assume profit has everything to do with it. Would assume at $10 admission and on average I would guess you have 400 supporters per game = $4000 gate per game would certainly cover the cost of field rental. Concessions, parking helps offset the college's cost and KHSAA makes their money on sponsors, the gate is expected to just break even on facility cost.

BB State Tournament has the same number of teams 16, seems to work just fine being held at one site, why can't it work for soccer?

The system is what it is. If they need to make any changes then I would start with making private schools adhere to enrollment the same as Ohio or Tn does or have the private schools form their own playoff system.

What difference does enrollment make when there are no classes? And if private schools have their own playoffs then wouldn't the best players want to play on those teams? And I guess Independent and tuition public schools need their own playoffs too?
